Delores's Story

Blest Be the Ties That Bind Dateline: September, 1977, a fishing bank somewhere near Minot, North Dakota: Two Baptist pastors sat together discussing life in their congregations. Eventually talk turned to the young man staying at Pastor Graves home for the weekend. "Nice young man. Just got back from six months in Alaska. But we have half a dozen single airmen in the church, and not one young lady for any of them to date!" The other, Pastor Jayne, answered, "Well, you know, I have a young lady in my church back in Topeka, Kansas, that has been after me for.well, years, maybe, to 'find her a fella'. Maybe we should get these two writing to each other." And thus, the Providence of God set the wheels of destiny in motion. Following that weekend, Pastor Jayne encountered Delores in the school office. "Hey, Miss Tuttle, have I got a surprise for YOU! I found you a fella!" At first, Miss Tuttle did not know if he was teasing her or deadly serious, so she began a series of questions. "So where is this guy?" "North Dakota!" "How's that supposed to work?, she asked, adding "That's over a thousand miles away!" "Oh, but he is a nice young man, Delores. You'll like him. He's a Staff Sergeant in the Air Force." "No way, preacher! After watching all my mom went through being an Air Force wife...packing up three kids, a house, selling a car, etc. etc. to go hither and yon. Un, uh! No way am I going to be an Air Force wife!!" "Don't worry, Delores! He will be getting out in a couple of years and going to Bible college. He's going to be a preacher!" "Me, a preacher's wife? You've got to be kidding!" Still not convinced that Pastor Jayne was serious, and her curiosity getting the better of her, Delores asked, "What's his name?" (thinking to trip him up if this were a joke). "Bob, ...something or other. Rhymes with magnolia...Spag-no-lee-ya or something like that." "But, preacher, I'll never be able to pronounce it let alone spell it! What kind of name is that?" "He's Italian. And he speaks with an accent." "Good grief! It certainly won't work. No way! My mom has always told me I could never marry an Italian, because I hate spaghettii!" And as she turned to leave the office, Pastor Jayne called after her, "Oh, by the way, Miss Tuttle, be watching your mailbox. I've sent him your address." Meanwhile, back in North Dakota, Pastor Graves was driving down the highway on a stormy afternoon with Bob. He reached into his shirt pocket and pulled out a small slip of paper. "Brother Bob, I'm not meddling in your life. But, well, this is the address of a young lady in Topeka, Kansas. WRITE HER!"... For two weeks, Delores watched her mailbox, and the day finally arrived when a letter from North Dakota awaited her at home. After four months of letter writing, Bob took leave and visited Delores in Topeka for six days. They became engaged ...Expand for more
January 16, 1978. He went back to Minot and she finished out her school year with Knollwood Baptist School in Topeka. July 11, 1978, Bob and Delores were married at South Knollwood Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas. Of course, both pastors officiated the ceremony. Bob and Delores made their first home in Minot, North Dakota. Long story short, Bob finished out his career with 24 years in the Air Force, (yes, moving Delores, two children, and one fat cat hither and yon), before finally retiring and settling the family in Topeka, Kansas. And, yes, Bob is a preacher of the Gospel and serves faithfully in our church here every week! And all those love letters? They have been stored in a very large boot box all these years. In celebration of our 30th anniversary, we have been re-reading them since last fall and reliving the memories...and falling in love all over again! Over the years, with all the trials of life, we have had to hold tenaciously to our belief in a sovereign God Who directs even the smallest details of our lives. Here are a couple of more "details" that didn't make it into the one-page edition of our love story: Prolog: We had had a missionary from Japan visit our church a few years before I met Bob. This missionary was explaining about the culture in that country and told about arranged marriages. Well, this was a totally new idea for me! He told how one young man in his church was very concerned that his unbelieving parents might arrange a marriage for him to an unbeliever, so he asked his pastor to do the arranging for him. Bling! A light bulb went off in my head. Why not ask my pastor to do the same for me since there were no eligible young men of character in our church? Epilog: Bob had been stationed in Minot before going to Alaska and pulled some strings in order to return there after his six-months duty so that he could return to the same church. Upon his departure from Alaska, he first went home to Boston on leave for 30 days. Meanwhile, my pastor and his father were helping his brother (yes, that's three Jaynes) to move from Kansas to Vancouver, BC. On their way back to Kansas, they skirted across the Canadian provinces and then dropped down into North Dakota, stopping over for a weekend with Pastor Graves in Minot before continuing on to Kansas. So that's how my pastor happened to be there that one weekend in September, 1977. But here is where the story gets really interesting. Remember Bob was in Boston visiting his dad? Well, after a couple of weeks, Boston seemed boring and he called Pastor Graves to ask if he could come on to Minot and spend a couple of weeks with him before signing into the base off of leave. Had he not cut his leave short and been staying at Pastor Grave's home that fateful weekend, WE WOULD NEVER HAVE MET! How's that for the providence of God working in all our lives!
