Demecia's Story

Biographical Statement In high school, my practical side thought I'd be a lawyer. It was a way to combat injustice, discrimination and racism. I wanted to make a difference in the world. After working as the Chief of Staff of an elected State Representative, my health forced me to leave the workforce. I began the process of rehabilitation until I was well enough to work part-time. Before that I was a Vice President in a non-profit organization for ten years. There I designed and coordinated public education programs in order to decrease stigma and increase public understanding and acceptance of people with psychiatric and developmental disabilities. In my own way, I am still working to improve the life of those individuals who have experienced bias. Although I never attended law school, I eventually obtained two advanced degree--one in Public Administration (MPA) and the other in Social Work (MSW). Education has always been a very important part of my life. During my years in high school I was always miserable. I did not feel pretty, part of the in-crowd, or particularly bright--although I knew if I worked harder I could do much better. At the time, I was just satisfied to be a "B" student. I did not want to stand out to much. Today, I know that, even then, I suffered from major depression--and like many African-American woman, I chose to deal with whatever difficulties I had by myself. But, I have learned that those years were milestones in my life. I had to go through whatever I went through in order to be who I am today. After high school, I got married right away. I got pregnant five days before my graduation. I have a beautiful and handsome son, whom I love dearly, but my marria...Expand for more
ge only lasted for seven years. I have been fortunate to marry a second time. My second marriage has lasted 23 years. Wilfredo is a good husband and a great guy! All throughout elementary and high school, my secret wish was to be a singer. My family and friends thought that was a stupid idea--so I never pursued. Later on in life I would end up with allergic rhinitis and asthma. It has destroyed my voice. It has been a "dream deferred and denied." The one person from high school who I'd most like to see again is Valarie Johnson, because she treated me with dignity and respect. She was one of the few people that accepted me as I was and not for whom she wanted me to be. People like that are few and far between. About 13 years ago, my husband and I bought a house. Actually, it was my 10th Anniversary present. It was and is a lovely thing that my husband did for me. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel bathroom and add on a foot or two.. My dream home would be twice as large as the one I have. My father died in August of 2006. Since that time it has been very difficult on my mom. If I won $100 million, I'd give 10% of it to my mom. She would be able to pay off her mortgage as well as some other bills that she needs to get rid of. After giving my mom 10%, I would spend the rest on bills, investments and savings. I also would probably retire. When I was in high school, I was in pretty good shape. I was the only one in my class to complete the one mile jog. Today, however, I have problems with my back--from and injury I obtained while at Central Commercial--as well as carpel tunnel syndrome and host of other ailments. Winning money is probably the only way I will ever be able to retire.
