Clare (Dene)'s Story
Memory Lane,
I will not renew my membership here in Jan. 2012, so be sure to checkout Facebook the're are alot of our classmates there and we would like to have you be our friends.
I married Nick Powers in 11/59. He was in the Navy and I moved to San Diego, CA and lived there until 7/61 when I came home to have our 1st son. After Nick got home from Westpac he came and got us and we moved back to San Diego and lived there until 8/63 when he got out of the Navy.We had our 2nd son in 7/67, then we divorced in 1976. I remarried in 1987 and now have a total of 4 grandkids two by my youngest son and two by my husband's youngest son.
Nick died in 2001 and we had become friends again before his death. Having grandchildren together tends to bring people closer together. He and my husband and my youngest son's father-in-law were all ex-sailors stationed on the west coast at about the same period of time, so whenever we went over to my son's house to visit, the guys would end up going out side to smoke and talk about the old days when they were in the Navy.
My granddaughter is very computer knowledgeable. She has been working with her Dad's computer before she even started preschool. She has me beat as far as using a computer. I took computer classes in the summer of 2003. So I would be able to get another job after being downsized in 6/03.
My old job did not require using a computer, just a ten key and typewriter. Now, I am in the 21st century like everyone else. My granddaughter turned 13 in October of 2011. My grandson turned 9 yrs old in March 2011. My daughter-in-law was a stay at home Mom, but now she works at the school. That way she is home with the kids when school is out.I have two step-sons and the youngest one has two kids, a boy and a girl. The girl is about one year older than my son's daughter. Their dad is a Sgt. with the Houston PD. I get along great with my husbands's kids and their families. His oldest son is in the Air Force and stationed in Utah. They bought a house in Clearfield. They had their frist child, a son, on March 8, 2011.
I don't do much more than go to work and back. I went to the reunion picnic in Sept. 2004 and really enjoyed myself, if you didn't make it you really missed a good time and eats. I hope we get to have another small informal get together before too much time goes by, because two of my friends, Rhea Smith and Frankie Williams have already passed away. I saw Frankie's husband Stuart Smith at the picnic and he told me about her passing. Just before we had our 40th reunion I was told that Rhea had passed away.
If any of you are wanting to contact me just go to FaceBook and look for Clare Cosper. I have been working on the 2009 reunion committee. We will be having such a great time getting to see everyone. I had mentioned Stuart Smith being a widower, well I found out in November that he has remarried. I am so happy for him and will be happy to see him again in June. We had a wonderful time at our 50th reunion, if you missed it I am so sorry for you because it was GREAT!
School
After I graduated I got engaged and did not go back to school until the summer of 1978 when I took one semester of classes at Tulsa Jr. College and then I went to school at Oklahoma School of Accountancy to get my Jr. Accountant certificate. I g...Expand for more
raduated in January 1980. I took Computer classes in 2003 so I would be able to get another job.
Workplace
I started to work for American Reserve Life Ins. in 5/81, their name changed to Republic Amer. Life Ins. in 1990. I was downsized in 6/03 after more than 22yrs. as accounting clerk/mgr. I started a new job on 7/22/04 with Gateway Mortgage Group here in Tulsa. I am in the accounting department. The people are really nice and friendly. It is now June 2008 and I have been at Gateway Mortgage Group for almost four years now and I really like my job. The company has grown by leaps and bounds and we now have 7 people in the accounting department. When I started there were only 2 others besides myself. There is one person in accounting that is about a year younger than me. The rest are a lot younger. At Republic I was older than everyone else by a lot of years. There was only one person that was close to my age and she was 2 years younger.I try to come in early every day and usually eat lunch at my desk and not take a lunch period. There is so much work to do and really not enough time to get it all done. Our company was on the list of 500 fastest growing companies in 2006. We have a very young boss/owner. He turned 34 the day that OSU played in their bowl game in 2007. He is a BIG OSU fan and alum.
Well, here it is Halloween 2008 and I got a not so nice trick. I got downsized again. The mortgage business has been taking a licking and now my former employer is not ticking as strong as before, they had to lay off several people. I have not decided what I will do, probably draw unemployment and maybe work temporary services or even draw my social security benefits.
Who knows.
Here it is April of 2010 and I am still unemployed, but I started drawing my social security at the end of 2009. I would like to work part time or even some temporary jobs, just to keep active and be able to communicate with people. Since being out of work, my husband uses my car and I am stuck at home unless I know ahead of time that I have to have my car to go to an appointment. There is something about having a car in the driveway at all times to make you feel free. You might not use the car, but it is there if you want to go somewhere. He is looking, he says, to buy another car for him to drive to and from work. I married someone that is about a year and a half younger than me, so he is still working a forty hour week.
My husband has been off work since May 18, 2010 because of a bad back, we found out that he has two collapsed discs and will be having back surgery on July 9th the day after his birthday. He is not planning on retiring until around Oct. 2010. I really would like to be working part time each day and be able to get out among People again.
It is now July 29, 2010 and my husband has had his surgery and it turned out the discs were not collapsed after all, just compressed. He will be going back to work on Aug.2, 2010. I have convinced him to wait until next Jan. to retire.. My husband retired Jan.5th 2011 and now he is underfoot all the time. We still only have one car and I am taking my Mother to the grocery store, beauty shop and Doctor visits. So I am not having to jst sit around doing nothingg. Still would like to work part time somewhere to get extra spending money.
