Denele's Story

My Life Story, Condensed Version 1966 - Univ of Arkansas, Fayetteville 1968 - Married in Las Vegas, living in Lompoc CA with Air Force officer husband 1970 - return to UA for rest of degree while husband is stationed in Phillippines 1971 - summer trip in Phillippines and Hong Kong 1972 - husband back and out of Air Force, we live at Fayetteville. He gets a masters and I finish my bachelors. 1973 - turn on, tune in, drop out (kind of) - purchased a rural gas station / grocery store with apartment in back; late that year, we divorced 1974 - met second husband, married 1975 - first child, settled on wooded hilltop for back to the land life: goats, chickens, wood stove 1977 - second child, more of everything. Growing most of our food, milking goats, butchering chickens. Off and on, I worked with my dad in his piano tuning hobby. He was still teaching band after they moved to Fayetteville in 1967, but moonlighting on pianos. 1980 - third child. Working lots more with piano business. 1982 - got my credentials as registered tuner technician with Piano Technicians Guild; expanded the business, moved from folks¿ garage to shop building between downtown square and UA campus 1984 - became part of executive committee with National Organization for Women, Northwest Arkansas 1986 - became officer with NWA chapter of Piano Tech Guild; got contract for UA pianos; other regional school systems, big churches, lots of private clientele. Business expanded to include additional employee 1987 - took leadership role in grassroots group protesting proposed municipal waste incinerator, protest was successful. Went on to spearhead regional environmental education; wrote weekly newspaper column on environmental issues. Got too busy for goats or garden. 1988 - purchased property where the piano shop was located, a block long strip along an old railroad right of way. Rented extra space to bands for rehearsal studios. 1990 - finally finished the add-on to our original house, to gain two more bathrooms, three more bedrooms, big family room, solar porch. Remodeled original part: kitchen, dining room, bathroom and master bedroom, plus small office. 1993 - end of second marriage 1994 - a book about my adventures in piano tuning was published Notes of a Piano Tuner - good reviews but didn't get rich 1990s in general was top piano tuner in region, continuing at UA plus arts center, other colleges. Trimmed shop operations down as my dad was increasingly unable to work and couldn't supervise employees. Ended involvement in...Expand for more
environmental activity as local governments adopted recycling and other more ecological practices. Kids hitting teen years, lots of angst. Working on more writing-- several articles researched on local history, published in Washington County Historical Quarterly, 'Flashback'. 1999 - organized group to start efforts in Arkansas to allow medical use of marijuana. This project involved three statewide petition efforts and four legislative efforts, none of which were successful in changing state laws. We continue, our most recent success has been a local initiative in Fayetteville where residents voted by two-thirds majority to make marijuana possession the lowest police priority. We are assisting activists in other AR communities with similar efforts. Do a Google search for Drug Policy Education Group if you want to see our website. 2005 - finally hit the wall on piano biz. Had been tiring of it for years. Since my dad died in 2004, it was something I just wanted to walk away from. 2005-2007 - began developing some real estate projects, specifically to purchase and remodel a property to be suitable as professional rehearsal studios. Now in business as Huntsville Road Studios, the facility holds 16 individual spaces each secure and soundproof, with all the amenities needed for bands to do their thang. Once bands were moved from original property downtown, I remodeled the old piano shop buildings and now have commercial rentals in ten spaces which include a vintage clothing shop, a salon/boutique, a bike repair/recyclery, a junk store, and a café. 2007 - 2009 I tried to stay home and write and do my watercolor, but couldn't gear down. Finally decided to go ahead with something I had wanted to do for twelve years -- open a tea room / café. It is now in the café space on my rental property. You can find our website by searching for Trailside Cafe and Tea Room. We also have a Facebook page. My oldest daughter lives in Santa Cruz CA where she works as an administrative assistant. She's 35. My son, middle child age 32, lives and works in eastern Arkansas. My younger daughter age 30 has just finished her masters and is my manager at the café for the time being. I live alone with three cats, a neurotic mostly Jack Russell, and a varying number of chickens, plus three large goldfish in my little garden pond. I write when I have time, but am mostly enjoying the creative process of producing food. I like early mornings at the café, chopping onions and thinking about what will be delicious on the plate.
