Denise's Story
Does anybody really read this?
Life has lead me through many twists and turns. Born into a nomatic family temporarily homesteaded in Palmdale CA to a CHP (cop) & Bioanalyst, at the age of 5 we moved to Yuba City. After four years there, we moved to Castro Valley (Bay Area).
My memories of the Bay Area include the race riots, FBI watching the drug-house across the street, riding my bike up and down the populated hills, and getting into a bit of trouble. Needless to say, my dad transferred out of the city as soon as possible which brought us to Sonora.
At the time, it was a sleepy town in the sleepy county of Tuolumne. Just one stop light in the entire town... Our house was on 2 1/2 acres populated by horses, pigs, and sheep. We were surrounded by undeveloped land where we could ride anywhere among the 1000's of acres there. There are few places where that is possible now! For 7 years we lived in Sonora -- the longest I have lived anywhere.
After high school, came college in Sacramento. It was during my sophomore year in college that God awakened me, calling to recommit my life and venture forth into ministry.
Following graduation, I worked for two years before heading off to the Boston area for seminary. There I met Tim Downs who was in medical student and 7 months later we were married.
After medical school, our first child, and my MA in Church History, we moved to Scott Air Force Base in IL where Tim completed his family practice residency and I bore my second daughter.
If education were part one of life's adventure, then part two would be applying what we learned.
And so we began part two of our adventure: we traveled with the Air Force to Okinawa Japan and lived there for 3 years where he practic...Expand for more
ed as a family practice physician and I lead home bible studies and worked part time with the Kadena Air Base chapels.
Not ready to return yet to the States, Tim transfered to the Public Health Service and we moved to Palau (north of Papau New Guinea & east of the Philippines & 9 degrees north of the equator). At that time it was a UN Trust Territory in trust to the US.
In Okinawa and Palau, I learned to scuba dive and saltwater fish. The underwater world was spectacular and fishing in Palau was awesome with 3 intercontinental currents intersecting to create a rich environment for underwater life. The rock islands abound with wildlife, evidence of WWII, and a time when life was simpler.
In Palau, I taught High School Bible Classes at the local Christian school and lead home Bible studies. After 3 years in Palau, we traveled to Boston where Tim worked as a Residency Training Physician and I returned to seminary for my MDiv - receiving ordination in the United Church of Christ in January of 1999.
Tim's work eventually took us to Midland MI & then to Grand Rapids MI where I worked as a Hospice Chaplain and Tim as a family practice physician. We thought we have finally settled down but life once again turned upside down when Tim died of Melanoma at the age of 49.
My nomadic life continued as I moved for work as an interim pastor from Michigan to Washington to Michigan again until I met Wayne. We married in May of 2009 and settled in Charlotte NC where we have just bought and moved into a home.
After 17 moves, I hope this is the last one for a long while! Life is an adventure best lived with gusto, determination and thanks which gives way to joy. Good is good and enables us to find deep joy in the journey.
