Denise's Story

Hello my old friends and acquaintances. I just realized that I could register at Burger Jr. High too...How fun! I was single until age 29, engaged once before that, married 18 years, and have two teenagers, boy 16, girl almost 15. My kids have been the focus of my life for 17 years. I worked part time while parenting to keep busy, make some extra cash and still work part time. I took a few college classes, never obtained a degree, I was into psychology and computers, still am. I went on to get a real estate license, but that didnt work well with parenting. I also went to cosmetology school in the mid eighties.I was an executive/administrative assistant for 10 years before attending cosmetology school for over two years at a top school in the state.Anyone remember me doing hair even in Junior high I was doing the do's!. I still do hair to this day, more for family friends, socializing, dallying around with it. I bartended while attending school. and had a stint waitressing for 5 years part time 2 evenings at Deluca's when I used to live in Dearborn Heights and my kids were babies. I participated in Fine Art Shows for 5 years, and my work made the front page of the Plymouth Observor in 2002 during the Plymouth Art Fest. I also have written a few articles on breast cancer, participated in fashion shows for women who have undergone surgeries due to breast cancer.( iam a survivor too. I am still an Artist..my work is displayed in our home, Ive sold several hundred pieces over a 5 year period. Some of my hobbies are, art first and foremost. I paint, airbrush some(new interest) do matting for picture framing, my husband makes frames for them in our work shop, and he is a great woodworker whose still learning and making beautiful solid wood funriture of oak, cherry etc - He is a bit like my dad who was a master carpenter, who is now retired in the Upper Penninsula with his wife, up by Houghton, off Lake Superior.(He's a YOOPER!!) Its so beautiful there, we go every year - its 10 hours away! I also computer browse, email, study medical things, I love learning and reading up on things, photography-freelance some, cooking and creating salsa, sauces, italian foods, pizza is still my favorite! Gardening with my son, he planted it this year, I canned it. Comedy shows and comedy clubs, I LOVE THEM!!. My sis and are are going to do a stand up act one day soon, we have a great time....it wont be clean comedy though, she's tough! I went to the 10 year reunion and I wasn't real comfortable with some of the clickiness. I think because I was single, and was finishing school that year, AND I was waitressing and I think I felt inadequate (being honest). Plus my recent boyfriend just dumped me a week before the reunion and dumped me for a friend from the old neighborhood, who I feel betrayed me then...they are married now, I got over it fast, we remained friends afterwards. Glad i didnt marry him! I went to the reunion with my BFF Kathy Sikorski because I was single & she was hoping to see a certain guy. Kathy was one grade lower than me, because her birthday was 2 week...Expand for more
s after the Dec 1, cutoff date. Kathy, a BFF since age 10 we stayed in contact. Kathy, she passed May 3,2007 after a 10 year battle with Cancer. I too am a two time breast cancer survivor. Ironically Kathy and I went thru it together both times,(unbeleivable!!) in 1998 and 2005. My mom was with us in 2005 with a new diagnosis....imagine me, Kathy and my mom,,,all bald together.....I am the survivor....cancer free, now 3 years since radiation/chemo. I'm not afraid to talk about it, in fact I share my storey alot....I'v vounteered at Karmanos for a surgical study and helped other women with new diagnosis. My health is good, except for some immune system complications, joint and muscular issues. So I started working out recently...I am on a weight loss mission right now after gaining 40 pounds from the chemotherapy/steroids. I was 25 lbs  over weight to start, but i finally lost 30 pounds of the 40.still got 25 to go..but i feel good and alot better.  I'm hoping to reconnect socially or e-mail with a few people, and would love to hear others stories. I just turned 47 recently, my husband is 48. Dominick  and I are possibly soul mates-sometimes I wonder because we dont always get along and he drives me crazy most the time! But we have so many ironies between us and are still together - its complicated. I have two kids in high school now and they behave better than I did for the most part! Being raised in a somewhat dysfunctional home, with divorced parents molded me alot different from them. I still have alot to teach them, they are both very smart and funny like I was..I actually graduated on the silver role, which surprised even me!   I see alot of myself in my kids...especially my daughter, she should be a comedien. My son is real outdorsy like me and really witty and funny. I'm hoping to attend the 30 year reunion next year. Hopefully some of us can reconnect and share our life's stories. I always wanted to be a nurse when I grew up. My family and friends thought that i was a fun person . As it turns out, they were right. My parents. My mom went thru so much as a child, wife, mother...she ended up as a leader at work, retiring upnorth, owned properties, my dad ended up getting sober, 32 years now. Finally on his third marriage is VERY HAPPY. He grew up without a mom, age 5 she died from cancer, his dad died when he was 18, he was an only child, he ended up being a teacher, probation officer, and example for those in Addiction and Recovery. He is an advocate for AA. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Sue Wilson, because she lived behind me, we had fun for many years..Karen Halser too we had the best time too....Even Lucy Honeycutt, she lived across the street from me. Life is good. Im so glad I had kids... I see little me's! Reminds me how adaptable we are to the changes in the world. They are smarter than I thought...they are smarter than I was! If I won $100 million, I'd give some of it to my sisters and in laws, then spend the rest on kids college, pay off all bills, got to Italy and retire by a beach. crazy huh!
