Denise's Story
Life
When I graduated from John Adams I joined the Army. I traveled all over the world and the experiences are invaluable. I wouldn't trade my time in the Army for anything. I would do it all over again, except get married at 19. I have a daughter, Felica, she is 17 and she is the light of my life. Once I retired from the Army I attended several colleges and received my bachelor's degree from the University of Houston. I tried to move back to Cleveland and that ended in disaster, don't think it was meant for me to move back home. I am a certified Special Education teacher. I really love my job. I currently attend Prairie View A&M University. I'm persuing a Master's in Education with a Principal Certification. I am single, but not by choice. I would like to meet a man with a good job, his own home and a decent car. Maybe one day I will. I like to have fun when I can. I have always loved to travel. The Army took me to places I had always dreamed of. That's my life up to this point.
College
At first I didn't think I could make it through college. But, after that first semester I was hooked and I just kept on going. I attended...Expand for more
my graduation ceremony. When I walked across the stage to recieve my diploma, it was such a great feeling of accomplishment. Now I'm working on my Master's and I think I will be done with college.
Military
I remember the day my recruiter came to pick me up and take me to the airport. I really didn't know what I was getting myself into. The Army is not the nightmare and Pvt. Benjamin movie some people think it is. I was young when I enlisted and I was away from home, on my own. I have traveled all over the world, Germany, Holland, Paris, Korea, Honduras, Belgium and all over the US. The twenty years went by very fast. There was a time when I didn't know if I would even retire, but I did and the rest is history. I am still receiving benefits from the Army. They have a program Troops to Teachers and they pay a lot of money for teachers to teach in low income areas. I prefer to teach in low income areas, so the money is a plus. The Army was a smart decision on my part, even though, at the time I joined I had no idea what I was doing. Well, I get a pension check every month for the rest of my life. The military has been good to me.
