Denise's Story
I came to New Mexico when I was almost 13 from Cleveland, Ohio. I was an inner-city kid who knew nothing about the desert. My life was chasing the DDT truck when it came down the street to spray for mosquitoes, backyard and sidewalk games, local markets, buses, waiting for the Good Humor Ice Cream man, and playing with many different ethnic neighbors as a kid. None of us spoke the same language except for maybe, English. One side of my family spoke Italian, the other German, so coming to New Mexico was a bit of a culture shock for me. I didn't get it- there was nothing to do and no place to go. My city had everything. What were we doing here? I graduated from Belen High School in New Mexico, in 1969. I left for Reno, Nevada the next day. I have always been infested with the wanderlust bug.....Expand for more
.. After a near fatal car accident in 1971, and making a very long, long story short, decided to go with my first love and sing for my supper. I became a professional vocalist a couple years after graduating and continued for the rest of my life working with some of the most talented people in the music business. I eventually got married to a music man. He was a musician from England and we both sang for our supper together for the next 12 years. We have one beautiful son together who is now a fabulous artist and musician in his own right. We lived in California's Mojave Desert and London, England. After a long stint in the world of music, entertainment field, and radio broadcasting, I came to work for the Univesity of New Mexico in Albuquerque. After living in two deserts, I get it now.....
