Deniz's Story
School
I remember attending kindergarten in Nurnberg Germany. I attended 1st and 2nd grade in Schwarzenbruck and Boeblingen, Germany. I attended 3rd, 4th and 5th grade in Mineral Wells, Texas. Third grade was in a small school way back behind the high school. Lamar Elementary is where I attended 4th and 5th grade. The first 2 months of 6th grade at Austin Junior High (MW) before moving to Japan. The majority of 6th grade was at Sagamihara Elementary School. Spent 7th and 8th grade at Camp Zama Middle School. Moved back to Texas and attended Mineral Wells High School for 9th and 10th grade. Moved to Massachusetts and attended The Bromfield School for 11th and 1/2 of 12th grade. Moved back to Mineral Wells, Texas and attempted to finish high school while working full time. This did not work out (I was sleeping through a lot of classes) and vice-principal (Campbell?) told me I had to either quit working or drop out of school. I didn't think I had a choice so I dropped...Expand for more
out. Fortunately, in 1981 Debbie Hobby (of Hobby's Car Wash) persuaded me to take the GED test.
Post School
I actually had a lot of varying and interesting jobs after high school. While in Mineral Wells, in addition to Hobby's Car Wash, I worked at Sonic Drive In, Pizza Inn, and Perry Equipment (PECO.) I was a roughneck working on a drilling rig for awhile. It was definitely the most interesting and exciting job I have ever had. I started at worm corner and eventually settled in throwing chain. I did attempt to work derricks but I wasn't strong enough to pull back the collars. I experienced one blowout, fortunately it didn't catch on fire. In 1982 I moved back to Massachusetts. I worked at the Louisiana Purchase (Littleton, MA) as a cook. This was a 2 star restaurant and served French Creole cuisine. Before I left the Louisiana Purchase I was able to prepare every dish on the menu. I also worked for Plastic Distributing Corporation (Ayer, MA) in quality control.
