People may remember that I went to Northern Michigan University. I graduated from there in 1975. When I went up to NMU, I had thought about becoming a chemist. But at the end of my freshman year, I got into a play. The following year the university decided to establish a debate team. I got on it and the following year they hired a young coach. I debated at NMU for three years and got to go to the National Debate Tournament my senior years, which is sort of like the NCAA baskeball tournament for debaters. Meanwhile, I got to see a lot of the country. We went to tournaments in Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, California, Washington DC. I was in the Senate balcont when Jerry Ford was confirmed as Nixon's vice president. I also met my wife, Claudia, who transferred to NMU from MSU at the start of my sophmore year. We were married in 1976 and will reach 32 years this year. I graduated from Northern and got into the University of Michigan Law School. I graduated in 1978 and started at a law firm in Detroit, Butzel, Levin, Winston & Quint. I was there for 14 years and in 1991 we went to Butzel Long, a much larger firm. I've been there since, except for a brief sabbatical when I set up my own firm. We have three kids. Carrie is 25 and is getting married at the end of July to someone she met at Western Michigan.
