Dennis's Story

People may remember that I went to Northern Michigan University. I graduated from there in 1975. When I went up to NMU, I had thought about becoming a chemist. But at the end of my freshman year, I got into a play. The following year the university decided to establish a debate team. I got on it and the following year they hired a young coach. I debated at NMU for three years and got to go to the National Debate Tournament my senior years, which is sort of like the NCAA baskeball tournament for debaters. Meanwhile, I got to see a lot of the country. We went to tournaments in Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, California, Washington DC. I was in the Senate balcont when Jerry Ford was confirmed as Nixon's vice president. I also met my wife, Claudia, who transferred to NMU from MSU at the start of my sophmore year. We were married in 1976 and will reach 32 years this year. I graduated from Northern and got into the University of Michigan Law School. I graduated in 1978 and started at a law firm in Detroit, Butzel, Levin, Winston & Quint. I was there for 14 years and in 1991 we went to Butzel Long, a much larger firm. I've been there since, except for a brief sabbatical when I set up my own firm. We have three kids. Carrie is 25 and is getting married at the end of July to someone she met at Western Michigan. he cafeterias at auto plants and is now a restaurant manager in LA. Dianna is 21. She just graduated from the computer science program at the U-M Engineering School. Amazing -- after all these years, there are only 21 women in the entire program in Ann Arbor. it reminds me of Linda Liszewski, who was the only woman in her graduating class in MSU's chemical engineering program. Dianna just started a job at Trading technologies in Chicago, a software firm that develops trading software for stock and commodity exchanges. She worked there two summers ago and liked Chicago. Our youngest is Ross, who is 18 and just finished his first year at MSU. He graduated from UD Jesuit High in Detroit. He's in theater, just was admitted to MSU's Bachelor of Fine Arts Program and had a good role in a play there this spring. He made the fourth callback on MSU's spring musical, Babes in Arms. He called me and was talking about the director, who was a Tony-nominated director from New York with local ties. He turned out to be Greg Ganakas. I work in Butzel Long's Bloomfield Hills office. I do commercial litigation, with some specialty in defending class actions and representing securities broker/dealers in customer lawsuits and enforcement actions. It sounds dull, but the characters I've met doing this can't be made up. After 30 years, I still enjoy the "hunt" involved in trying a case.
