Dennis's Story
Life
I guess that a bit has happened since I graduated from the hallowed hallways of the mighty Aledo Senior High School, home of the Green Dragons or sat up in "Queer's Corner." There are times when I wish that I had the chance to roam those hallways again, but those sort of wild and carefree days are long gone. Now the only senior moments that I have are the ones I face on a daily basis. If we could only do it over again, I've tried clicking my heals, but it doesn't work, seems to only break a stiletto or two. I have been a bit of a nomad the last couple of decades. Have lived and travelled through much of the U.S. and have even lived in Europe for 12 years. Have seen and experienced quite a bit; some of it good, some of it not so good. Am married and living on the beach now, stationed in Ft. Monroe, VA. I think that this will be my last tour before reitiring from the military, but I've said that before. I am now a Chief Warrant Officer Five and working Warrant Officer leadership/education issues for Training and Doctrine Command here at Ft. Monroe. Have been married now for four years. She is a teacher in the public school system and also teaches with George Washington University in downtown D.C. We are maintaining two homes for the time being; she is back in Vienna, VA and I live down on Monroe during the week. Got back from Germany after nine years over there in Dec 2000. They made me come back after having been an almost ex-pat for so long. It took some adjustment to get used to the States again, but am glad to be back. Whenever I am back home in Aledo it takes a couple of days to get used to no traffic and the constant quiet. It is kind of relaxing, but after about a week I am ready to come back home wherever that is at the present. Aledo hasn't changed much from when I left. A new Walmart, a couple fast food places, the park has been renovated..but about the same. Yes, I am still in the Army. It has been 27 years now, but it doesn't seem that long and I still enjoy my job, so might as well stay in for at least a couple more years and then it will be time to thi...Expand for more
nk about retirement and a second career of some sort, maybe door greeter at the Walmart in Aledo. Of course I am concentrating on retiring some day down to Florida or some place warm. I can't stand cold weather and would not miss the snow. Had enough of that growing up. But that goal is probably a bit down the road. My kids are doing fine. Both my son and daughter graduated from the University of Illinois, so I am a bit proud of them. My son is an Engineer and lives outside of Chicago and my daughter is an Architect and is currently living near D.C. I still get back to Aledo when I can and try to make it back at least a couple of times a year. My Mom is still residing on North College Ave and of course my three sisters and all of their families are living within an hour's drive from there. I consider myself lucky for growing up in Aledo and have witnessed a lot of other places in the U.S. and around the world that I wouldn't have liked to grow up in. Sometimes you forget the little things that mean so much but you take for granted. Well, I suppose that this isn't meant to be an autobiography, so will quit for now. If you are reading this and still live in the Aledo area, I will probably be seeing you during one of my trips back there. If not and you would just like to drop a note to say hello, please do either via this site or my adress which is dwericks at msn dot com. Take care...
