Dennis's Story
Life
My name is Dennis Howard Kaufman. I currently live in La Mirada with my twin brother named Kevin and my father. I used to live with my mother but in 2005 she got really ill and she eventually died of cancer spreading from her kidney to her lungs. She was 55.
In June 2005, I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics from California State University, Fullerton.
I am now a new instructional aide at Excelsior Adult School in the city of Norwalk. I am really enjoying this job. One of my former teachers from La Mirada High School, Dan Wood, hired me for this job. Dan Wood is now one of the Assistant Directors there at the adult school. The pay for this job is great. So I get really nice paychecks each month. I provide assistance with the classroom material for the students learning the material and the teacher teaching it. I help the students learn algebra, the basic properties of arithmetic, basic properties of geometry, and how to convert fractions to decimals to percents, and vice versa, as it is taught by the teacher. Not only that, I help the teacher put up solut...Expand for more
ions to homeworks up on the board. I also go around the classroom to see if the students need help with the math problems, and if so, explain the problems to the students with patience and with paper and pencil or pen. I also work out the problems for the whole class on the board in front of the class as well. One Thursday, I helped the teacher run off some 30 copies of two sections of a textbook that the teacher was going to go over with some problems for all the students to work on. Here is what is also extremely nice about this job of mine. I get the greatest opportunity to see some familiar faces I used to see at my old high school, La Mirada High School. One of them is my former counselor named Sharon Renfro, who is now the main Director of the adult school. Another is my former language arts teacher named Sue Green, who is now the other Assistant Director of the adult school in Norwalk. I remember, in Sue Green's freshman class, that I read the play "Romeo And Juliet" by Shakespeare and the novel "Great Expectations" by Charles Dickens all during my freshman year in high school.
