Dennis's Story
Life
After graduating from Garinger, I worked with Campus Life for a year before going to college at Taylor University in Indiana. While at Taylor, I met my beautiful wife, Renee, and we married in 1977. I graduated from Taylor University with a degree in Christian Education, Biblical Literature and post-graduate studies in Systems Analysis.
After graduation, Renee and I worked at Taylor University for a few years before moving to Illinois in 1981 where Renee went to work for World Vision International and I joined her father building residential homes in Arlington Heights, IL. In 1984 our son, Paul was born and in 1986, our daughter, Sarah was born. In that same year I left residential construction and became a stock broker. After taking a battery of various exams and certifications I eventually became a partner in an investment advisory firm.
In 1989 Renee's father asked me to rejoin him at Lexington Homes to assist with a new product they were building. I sold out my interest in the investment advisory firm and rejoined Lexington Homes until 1991 when the company was sold and we retired from residential construction.
In 1991 Renee and I opened Oasis Christian Bookstore in Lake Zurich, Illinois. Renee's father, Peter, retired to Harvard, Illinois and began what was going to be a very small apple orchard. But by 1994, he had planted over 5,000 apple, peach and plum trees. Then in 1995 he planted another 5,000 trees. By 1997 they had opened to the public and had over 10,000 apple trees and Royal Oak Farm Orchard w...Expand for more
as born!
In 2002 my son, Paul, married and in the spring of 2003 our first grandson was born! The Norton name lives on!! That same year Paul and his family moved up to the orchard at Royal Oak Farm to join the operation. Also that same year we were approached by a party that wanted to purchase our bookstore and Renee's dad wanted us to join them at the orchard.
In 2003 we sold the bookstore, became farmers and our daughter Sarah went off to Taylor University to study music! Royal Oak Farm Orchard is now a 240 acre apple and peach orchard and I am now a pomologist, entomologist, IPM Specialist and a state Certified Nurseryman at Royal Oak Farm Orchard.
Our entire family lives here on the farm where we now have over 15,000 apple trees, and over 1,000 peach trees. Yes, we can grow peaches in northern Illinois! Visit us at royaloakfarmorchard.com.
In the spring of 2006 grandson number 2 was born. There are now 4 generations of the family living here at the farm in 3 homes spread throughout the orchard. Our son, Paul and his wife, Meghan now have 6 children ranging in ages from 10 to 10 months!
Our daughter Sarah, graduated from Taylor in May of 2008, and in January of 2008, her fiance, Justin, who graduated from Taylor in May of 2007, moved from California to the orchard to become our accountant and Financial Director. Sarah is now our Special Events Coordinator and assists Justin in Marketing while also teaching voice and piano in her private studio. They married in 2009 and just had a new baby boy last November!
