Dennis's Story
Autobiography of Dennis William Simpson
I am the eldest son of World War II and Korean Veteran, Arthur Marcus Simpson and Lillian Nadine Saso. I was born April 1, 1952, at Los Angeles County General Hospital, the very same place my mother and her siblings were born. Like my father, I enlisted in the U.S. Navy, also like my father, we were both Life Members of DAV, Disabled American Veterans. After my discharge from military service, Gov. George Wallace of Alabama, commission me with the rank of Lt. Colonel in the Alabama State Militia.
I returned to school and majored in Private Investigation at Knoxville, Tennessee. A year after completing my graduate studies, I began working for the U.S. Postal Service on July 17, 1976 and retired April 6, 2009 with 33 dedicated years of service.
In the latter half of 1988, I began organizing the California Society of the War of 1812. This vision was soon realized when the General Society granted a charter at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The newly formed State Society was chartered March 4, 1989, on the 200 anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution. I served as its first President from April 1, 1989 until February 16, 1991. After my term as State President, I took over the office of Treasurer, and from that time to the present the Society's treasury continually grew and our organization continued to prosper. Upon leaving office, I was bestowed the title of President Emeritus, with Life Tenure.
On April 16, 1991, I was featured in the local newspaper, "The Santa Clarita Signal" in a piece entitled "Star-Spangled Banner on the War of 1812." On July 18, 1992, I was presented with a President's Commendation Award, and on September 19, 1992, was the first recipient of the California Society's Meritorious Service Certificate, which reads as follows: "In grateful recognition of the imagination, initiative effort and personal funds expended in the conception and founding of this, the California Society, without which it would not exist."
About the same time I received these awards, I instigated the concept of developing a library to house our growing volume of books on the War of 1812. Under my direction, the Library of the California Society has grown to shelve several different books. These books are currently housed in Southern California, at the Sons of the Revolution Library in Glendale, California.
Under my influence, I also started a scholarship program, the purpose was to help deserving high schoool graduates with an opportunity to continue their higher education. ...Expand for more
Presently, I am serving as District Deputy President General of the General Society of the War of 1812 for the Pacific District.
Additionally, to the dedication I have for the Society of the War of 1812. I have authored several books on historical subjects of American History, this despite the fact that English wasn't my favorite subject in school. I have written numerous articles for several historical societies throughout the nation. Books written include, "Simpson and Allied Families," "The Lives and Genealogical Records of the Charter Members of Helion Lodge #1, Birthplace of Masonry in Alabama." "The Descendants of Doctor William Simpson," and my most recent book, "The Society of the War of 1812 in the State of California, the First Five Years."
My most enjoyable journey through my life has been given the opportunity to travel this beautiful Nation of ours in 1973, I been in every state except Hawaii. I even hitch hike from Alaska, traveling back to Morro Bay, California, where I remained until 1974, when I moved to the San Fernando Valley.
Despite some medical setbacks, I can honestly say I have been blessed with a good life, it was all possible with my faith in our Heavenly Father, who provided everything I could possibly want out of life and much more.
In addition to my life membership in the DAV, I served as Senior Vice Commander of Camp Kearney, Van Nuys, California. I hold membership in the following worthy organizations: Sons of the Revolution, Sons of Confederate Veterans, Sons of Union Veterans, Sons of the Republic of Texas, Society of First Families of Ohio, Society of Indiana Pioneers, Society of the First Families of the Tennessee River Valley, Life Member American Numismatic Association, Nicolas Martiau Descendants Association. (Both George Washington and Elizabeth II of England are also lineal descendants of Nicolas Martiau).
I am happily married to a beautiful young wife name Sopida, from Thailand. I am the proud father of three children. William, age 35, Dennis, age 29 and Melissa Simpson, age 28.
Additionally, and most importantely to me, my Heavenly Father, as stated earlier he has blessed me with many things throughout my lifetime. But the greatest of these gifts he has given me is his son, Yahshua. He is the greatest gift any man, woman or child could ever receive from a loving Father. You see you cannot earn Salvation by being good or doing good. It is a gift freely given to everyone. They in turn need only faith to receive it.
