Dennis's Story

My Life After getting our of High School I joined the Air Force. In the Air Force, I was stationed at McConnell AFB, in Wichita, for two years and then the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, for 3 1/2 years. I was a Medical Corpsman and I worked in the Outpatient Clinic, Emergency Room, Ambulance Driver, in the Shot Clinic and did EKG's. At both bases I made the base baseball, softball and bowling team's representing these locations in Air Force worldwide tournaments. I also had a part time job at Bowl-Mor Lanes in Colorado Springs working the control desk. I got married a week before coming to AFA to Dorene Bray. We had a daughter Susan on Mar 30, 1961 she was the first girl born a the AFA Hospital. We had a 2nd daughter Stacy in Nov 62. I got out of the AF in May 1963 and returned home to Milwaukee, Wis. I change my last name from Sitowski to Scott in 1964. Ironically, it was official on my birthday, March 13. I found a job a the Nordberg MFG Co in 1963 and served a Machinist Apprentice for 4 years. I also took college classes for Manufacturing Engineering. I became a Journeyman Machinist in July 67. Finished my college in June 69 becoming a Manufacturing Engineer and went to work the office at Nordberg in the Special Projects, Hydraulics and Valve Division. Dorene and I had a son, David in Feb 65 and a premature daughter Shelley in Aug 66. Weighing 2 pounds an ½ oz. At that time they advised me that Shelley only had a 1% chance of survival and would probably not live the day. The doctors asked permission to do some experimental treatments. Shelley is now 46 and a mom of 2 sons. But, when I finished my apprenticeship in July 67 my wife served me divorce papers in Aug 67. After a couple years I met Sharon Behlendorf we got married on April 18, 1970. I was working part time at the Red Carpet Lanes bowling center near the Milwaukee airport. In February 71, I became the Manager of the center. I felt working in a bowling center was better than the factory and in the long term offered more. I have been managing bowling centers ever since. (40 years) In 1973, I was promoted and managed the Red Carpet Hotel for about 4 years. Then Red Carpet built a 72 lane bowing center, Celebrity Lanes in December 1977. I was transferred to work there and opened the brand new center. Celebrity Lanes hosted a lot of City, State, National and Professional tournaments. The center also hosted 2 weekly TV shows airing from the center . Sharon and I had a son Eric in 1973 and in 1975 we had another son Ryan. In July 79, the Don Carter chain offered me a job in New Orleans. However, after being there we found that we all hated New Orleans, it was a major culture shock. I was able to find a job with Brunswick Corporation in Seal Beach, California, in Feb 81. We were there for 5 happy years. In 1986, the Red Carpet chain contacted us and asked us to return to the company and back home to Milwaukee. Much was promised for an upper management position and the future looked bright. But, it all fell apart 19 months later as the company was sold and the new owners felt they owed no past promises that needed to be kept to anyone. I found a job on the East Coast of Florida, Merritt Island and a...Expand for more
fter 18 months this individual became financially strapped due to other poor investments. Once again, I had to find another job I took a job with the Fair Lanes bowling chain in Baltimore. But, they too sold the company five months later and had the new owners had major financial difficulties. I was manager Southdale Lanes. I stayed there for about 3 years But everything kept getting worst, as I began looking again. In 1991 two major thing took place #1 My son Eric's American Legion baseball team won the American Legion National Championship (His 2nd National Championship) Plus, Eric made the All-City (twice) and the All-State team in Football as a Quarterback and the All-City and All-State in Baseball in his Junior and Senior years. #2 My wife served me with divorce papers after 21 years. I felt no reason to stay in Baltimore. So I found a job with AMF in Florida in 1991 Altamonte Lanes, in Orlando for 2 years. Then I was promoted to District Manager of 7 AMF bowling centers Western Florida. I held that position over 4 years. In 1993 Fair Lanes chain went bankrupt and the company was picked up by AMF and merged in. In the Fall of 1996, I came upon 2 disasters #1 Larry Ross, a Fair Lanes guy, became Regional Manager of the Florida area. Ross had a dislike for me from the start going back to Baltimore when I quit on him to go to AMF. #2 I found out that I had prostate cancer. I had the surgery in December 1996 and was out of work for about 8 weeks. 2 days after I returned to work Ross let me go saying I did not fit into his plans. Looking for a job went well, I had several job choices, but I was not yet fully recovered from my surgery, so I took the course of least resistance and went to work for an independent owner of a bowling center in Lakeland, Fla. I was living in Lakeland at the time. It was an okay job but did not pay enough money I was there 2 years I found a better job in Aurora, Ill, at Parkside Lanes, in December 1998, a 54-lane center. After being single for 10 years I met Trudy Dudley and we got Married on August 4, 2001. From there I went to Indianapolis in April 2003 and managed a 80 lane bowing center for 8 years. The company restructured in summer 2010 and myself an two other managers that were in their 60's were phased out. The company said it had nothing to do with age.... Yeah right. I found a job in Pittsburgh managing two centers and started in Feb. 2011. Despite increasing business and the bottom line the owners felt the increases should have been larger from someone with my experience and let me go in October 2011. Trudy and my kids convinced me to retire and we moved back to Lakeland, Florida January 1, 2012. I sat around watching TV for 8 months. But now I have recently found a part time job (2 nights) at a bowling center in Winter Haven and I also just found a job at a golf course working in the cart barn. Neither job pays much but do offer free bowling and golf, so that is a big plus in the pocketbook. Currently, I have 7 kids, 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grand children . Trudy has 8 kids and she has 15 grandchildren. We live right in between Orlando and Tampa so if your are coming to Disney or nearby let us know it would be nice to see you.
