Dennis's Story
Life
Moved into Bayside at the ripe old age of 7. Went the PS213, PS74 (converted to IS74 while in attendance), and then Cardozo HS through 1974. Rather than continue on to Queensboro CC, I chose to join the NAvy. Stayed with the Navy until I retired from active duty in 1998(stayed with them for another 3 years as a civilian contractoruntil 2001).
I have a daughter, 25 years old, living in Utah. Played sports year 'round (not much else to do on that side of Horace Harding). As I was kind of small way back then, I was prone to do some rather "off center" things. Some good, some not so good. It did provide me with excellent tools for some of the things required of me while in the Navy. I've been to over 45 different countries, witnessing various cultures different than the ours.
During my irregular visits back to Bayside, people wouldn't recognize since I had "filled out some", cut my long hair and had teeth replaced (another adventure growing up).
School
Played handball alot. Mr. Collumb was the handball coach (actually kep...Expand for more
t me in school). Mr. Drew was my Social Studies teacher for 2 years, Mr. Mamakos for English. Most of my other teachers were a blur. As with most students, I hung around with those from my neighborhood which was the Oakland Gardens/Springfield Blvd, Cloverdale Blvd, the "court" and Bayside Cardinals. Left Bayside to join the Navy right after school. I'd return to visit family and friends every now and then. Boy, did that place change quickly. Wound up with the Navy for 26 years and have lived in Southern CA. for the past 4.
Military
I joined the Navy in 1975 and have had quite a few adventures through my retirement in 1998 and the 3 years working for the Navys' Morale,Welfare and Recreation Program (still had to ride aircraft carriers too!). I'm quite happy that the Navy allowed me to get out of my neighborhood and see how other people live and, subsequently avoid the same track that many of the people I knew back in Bayside took. I retired as a Chief Warrant Officer, having been to over 50 different countries
during my career.
