Dennis's Story

Life as it be: Well before graduation from high school I joined the Virginia Army Nation Guard, the 1033rd Trans Company out of Gate City Virginia in January of 1985. That summer I went to basic training at Fort Dix New Jersey where I completed Basic Training from B Company 4th Battalion 5th Training Brigade. I graduated Gate City High School in June of 1986 and that summer I went Fort Dix, New Jersey for my AIT in C Company 36th Transportation Battalion for 64C (now 88M Motor Transport Operator) we were double clutch truckers, I graduated 2nd in my class. In the fall of 86 I was hired by J.P. Stevens and worked there until March of 88. I joined the U.S. Army and went to Fort Lee, Virginia for AIT and became a 92F Petroleum Supply Specialist, graduating 3rd in my class. In June of 88 I went to Fort Dix, NJ again to take the H7 Course to become a Petroleum Vehicle Operator and was the Distinguished Honor Grad. From there I reported to Fort Benning, GA for Airborne School, then in August of 1988 I reported to West Germany to the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment in Nurnberg. I was there for the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War. I was also the last Soldier to leave Camp Mays (a border camp on the Cezh border). In August of 1990 I left Germany and reported to Fort Campbell, KY. Home of the most powerful division in the world. I was stateside 64 days and was headed to Operation Desert Shield / Operation Desert Storm. I returned from there in late April 1991. That summer I made my fastest time on the 2 mile run in 12 min 31 sec. ter returning from Operation Desert Storm. I was just a bit tired after that. In the spring of 1992 I graduated the Primary Leadership Development Course at Fort Campbell. In the summer of 1992 I left Ft Campbell, KY and drove to Fort Wainwright, Alaska and reported there the first week of September 1992. I was stationed in Alaska from 1992 to August 1995, while I was there I was the Battalion Master Driver, was promoted to the rank of Sergeant, and attended the Artic Survival School (burr it was COLD). In September of 1995 I returned to Ft Campbell for a 6 year tour. While back at Fort Campbell and was assigned to Company B, 7th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment (CH-47 Chinooks), I returned to skydiving at an avid rate of some days doing 7 jumps per day. In the late summer of 1996 in returned to Fort Lee, Virginia for the Basic Noncommissioned Officers Course and graduated 3rd in my class, and returned to Ft Campbell in October of that year. In 2001, after almost 6 years of being at Ft Campbell, I was reassigned to Camp Stanley, South Korea for 1 year and served in Battery A, 1st Battalion, 38th Field Artillery (MLRS) as the senior Petroleum Chief. After completing my tour in Korea, I was reassigned to 1st Battalion 22nd Infantry Regiment at Fort Hood, Texas. I had fought coming to Texas for sometime, but it turned out to be the best thing that could happen to a guy, becuase I met my wife Debora and we got married. I am now on my 4th combat trip to Iraq, and already several months past my retirement. Soon this saga will end and I can go home and be a husband to my wonderful wife. So that she and I can get on the Nomad and take a nice long weekend trip canyon carving through the hill country of Texas.
