Derek's Story

Life Life is great:) Since Ike, I've let my passions guide me to my destinations. After graduation I worked for a while to pay for college and ended up at Western Michigan. There I met my beautiful wife and graduated with an Education degree and recently finished my Master's. We now live in Roscommon, MI (Higgins Lake) where we both teach and enjoy every minute we get to spend with our two children Eliot(4) and Edith(1.5). I'm currently teaching Algebra at Houghton Lake Middle School and my wife teaches 2nd grade in Grayling. This is a great area to live if you are into outdoor activities. I've been part of the mountain bike race circuit and now help with organizing adventure races in Northern MI. My true outdoor passion is rock/ice climbing, winter camping, and mountaineering. sea kayaks packed for week long excursions - she leaves the cold trips for the guys. We sure love those summers off though. Our next goal - a sailboat to spend our summer on:) Beside teaching, I also work as a tech rep for an outdoor company - we basically put on outdoor gear demos, everything from climbing boots, jackets, and clothing to camp stoves, tents, and sleeping bags. To indulge my artistic side, I still play and perform music all over Northern MI - every once in a while in the Detroit area. I started playing guitar at age 10 and have been obsessed ever since. Although I write a lot of my own music (especially acoustic instumentals), I mainly perform covers in solo acoustic sets or semi-electric sets in a trio. It's so much fun, I cannot believe that they actually pay me - but I'm glad they do:) I hope this reaches everyone in good health - take care. Derek
