Derek's Story
I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, on Yale Avenue off of East 105th Street near St. Clair, and went to Empire Junior High School from 1968 to 1971. I graduated from Cleveland Heights High School in 1974, and subsequently enlisted in the US Air Force.
I went on active duty in November 1974 and stayed in the military for 24 years. I spent almost all of that time overseas, with the exception of training and my first duty assignment at Kelly AFB in San Antonio, Texas (75-77). After Kelly AFB, it was Osan, Korea (77-78); Zaragoza, Spain (78-84); Madrid, Spain (84-87); Soesterberg, The Netherlands (87-93); and finally, Ramstein, Germany (93-98). I moved back to Cleveland after my military service was completed.
Zaragoza, Spain, will always be the place closest to my heart. Although I did love Madrid when I lived there, Zaragoza will always be like home.
I got serious about getting my degree when I was stationed in Germany and I received my Bachelors Degree in Business Management from the University of Maryland in 1997.

ry and Eugene, who were both born when I was stationed in The Netherlands. I have two older brothers (Eugene Guyton, Jr., and Mitchell Guyton) who are retired law enforcement professionals, and I have a younger brother (Jonathan) and younger sister (Keisha)
I presently work for Cleveland Municipal Court, and I have been with the court since December 1998. I really enjoy working there.
I'm still, and have always remained, an ardent Cleveland sports fan. Plus, despite Maryland being my alma mater, I'm a Buckeye through and through. My favorite college teams are always Ohio State and whoever is playing Michigan.
My dad was from Newark, Ohio, which is about 30 miles east of Columbus, so here is a shout out to anybody from Licking County. I still go down there to visit family once a month.
I was lucky to have been so many places. There were a lot of places that I could have and should have visited. But then again, I got to places that I never thought that I would see when I was a kid growing on Yale. A lot of great memories......
