Derek's Story
Married August 1995 to my wonderful wife Marie. Have two step daughters Alicia -14 going into highschool, Haley 10 going into middle school. Have two sons with my wife. Jackson who is 2yrs 4 months and Lucas who is 11 months.
Graduated Salem State in 96 went on to teach art in Wakefeild and Ayer Ma. Managed to teach all grade levels K-12. Received my masters in elementary education 1-6 from Lesley college in Cambridge
on 2000. Taught for 4.5 school years.
Left teaching to run restaurants. Started at the Emerald Rose in Billerica as the Assistant General Manager then on to the Vinny Testas restaurant group for a few years. From there I worked for Tod English mainly at Kingfish Hall in Boston but also at his Figs and Bonfire restaurants as well. Left the Olive group and went into painting. Had my own business for a while. Ran a small restaurant South Kitchen for a short while but went back into painting.
For the last 2 years I've been working for a highend contractor. Doing carpentry, painting, and running some jobs for him.
I live in Leicester which is just west of Worcester. We have a house, a pool, a trampoline and 2 wonderful great danes Samantha & Maximus. My life is now dedicated to my wife and children which i...Expand for more
s why I work all the time. Doing my own jobs nights and weekends to make ends meet and enjoy some of lifes extras.
After 7 years of school, careers from teaching to bartending to painting to what I do now, I'm like most people I know. Trying to get by in a down economy and raise a family to the best my ability. So much for the long days and nights of drinking during college into my years of restaurants. Good bye to drinking long after last call because I had the keys to the doors. But in the end, after all the time spent enjoying life worrying about no one but myself and caring about nothing most of the time, I have the world on my shoulders in the form a family to care for, little to no time for a life outside of family, but wouldn't trade it for the world.
Never thought life would end up this way for me, never thought life would take these turns but when I wake up each day I'm happy with where I have landed. Who knows maybe someday I'll pick up a paint brush and actually paint a picture again or pick up a camera and develop my own photos like in the past. Maybe it will happen when children are ready to learn about art. Who knows.....
