Desirae's Story

Hey there, CC elementary Classmates! I went to Carson City Elementary for grades 2 & 3. I was in Mrs. Buskirk's 2nd grade classroom and sat at the same table at the back of the class with Sharon Koehn, a boy named Brent, and another girl. We were also near Suzie Yeoman, who sat near the window. I remember doing a lot of SRAs that year! In 3rd grade, Mrs. Walters and her aide, Mrs. Sherd, were my teachers, and I remember Lecia Sprigg (sp?) Jill Kaputzka (sp?), Steve Proctor, Patty Moscow, Kim Hickey, Steve Stanton, Kathy ?, and Bobby ? (who wore bib overalls sometimes) My family moved to Ionia, and I finished my school years there. I graduated from Ionia in 1981. I still have fond memories of a handful of friends from CC Elementary - some Brownies from meetings at Patty Moscow's house in Butternut, and bus-buddies from our schoolbus rides through Vickeryville, Butternut, and Crystal (those crazy Shreiner boys!) I also remember the Chandler Feed Store & Mercantile and our tall classmate Cindy Chandler, as well as the Butternut Bible Church's Sunday School class, held in the downstairs classrooms. I still remember a few of the lessons, parables, and songs from then. Whenever I taste watered-down Kool-ade or a vanilla wafer, hear the story of Saul becoming Paul, or the song "Good News" I'm brought right back to Butternut Sunday school. Bless those teachers! Update: I got to visit Butternut Bible Church last July. I met the Pastor and his wife and saw the new annex they added on the back side of the church. I didn't get to see the basement classroom - now a storage area- but the pulpit and the table in front of it are exactly the same. gram for so many of us country-kids, back then...loud singing ("Good News!"), the games, and wearing our grey uniform shirts with our earned awards on them. When our family moved to Ionia the following year, we joined a local church's AWANA club, and it offered continuity and immediate friends while we were growing accustomed to our new hometown. I remember swimming at Crystal lake in the summertime, too. It was fun because it was so shallow that we could swim out really FAR! A few of my relatives enjoy their summertimes near Crystal lake (nice to see the improvements and recent changes there! Someone said the old carrousel might even be brought back and put near the beach!) Some other extended family spend their summers at the quieter 5th lake of the Chain-of-Six-Lakes a little farther north. Our annual family reunion is held there, also...warm stories and good laughs around bon-fires and picnic tables there! I love them all dearly, and think of them often! A classmate from Ionia, Mike Thomé, and his wife (D) & family, settled in CC with their Veterinarian practice for horses and other farm animals. If you get the chance, or need a farm vet, stop by and say Hello! He's a smart, thoughtful, caring vet and farmer, and a really good guy...who likes to fish! - I'd LOVE to hear from any of you who have a fun memory of CC Elem, or maybe news of any mutual friends! (Remember racing to get a Whirly-gig chain at recess-time? ...and Ms. Passi playing her harpsichord in music class, while we all sang together? - about Johnny going to war, and Michael rowing that boat ashore?) I remember a school assembly where all of the teachers sang "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing" Happy times in beautiful country! 🌱☀️🍁❄️
