Devon's Story

Hello, everyone, and welcome. As some of you know I spent my formative years in the Sarasota, Florida public school system. As it turns out I received a decent education. In the summer of 1968 my family moved to Atlanta because my step father had acquired a position in management at Canteen, the vending company. In the fall of that year I attended North Fulton High School on the northeast side of Atlanta. North Fulton doesn't exist anymore. They turned it into an "international school" whatever the hell that means. I graduated in the summer of 1969 just in time to see Cream with the Terry Reid Group at the Chastain park amphitheater, the same place where our graduation had been held. I worked as a warehouse manager for Canteen in the summer and started at Dekalb College (now called Clarkston Junior College). I could not afford to support myself and moved with my family to Sanford, North Carolina where I vegetated until I put a fist through the wall of my parents pool room. I moved back to Sarasota in September of 1970 and moved in with Johnny and Jimmy Boyd on Desoto Road off Hwy 301. I went to work for First Federal Savings and Loan as an Addressograph/Graphotype Operator. I was drafted into the Army/Marines in February of 1971 but "dodged" into the Air Force where I figured my chances of dying were diminished. I guess that worked out OK. I went to Saigon in May of 1972 after spending a year between Denver, CO, San Antonio, Texas, and Sumter, South Carolina. I was a photo interpreter who planned and scored B52 missions. In Feb of 1973 when the peace treaty went into effect we moved to Udorn, Thailand. That was a blast. So was Saigon for that matter. From there I went back to South Carolina then back to Thailand. 7 months later I was in Hampton, Virginia for a year. Someone was watching over me because I spent the next three years in Hawaii. That was a highlight. I had a beautiful Japanese apartment near the University of Hawaii in Honolulu and worked on 2nd shift. I went surfing every day. Totally awesome. During a temporary duty assignment I met and courted my first wife and my oldest daughter Jennifer Rose, who was two at the time. We were married in 1979 and by the end of that year we were in Omaha, Nebraska with my wife 6 months pregnant. My 2nd daughter, Julia Suzanne, was born at the end of March, 1980. We ended our Air Force careers in January, 1981 and moved to San Mateo, California so my wife could be close to her mother. We both attended College of San Mateo and received Associate Degrees in Business. In 1985 my 3rd d...Expand for more
aughter, Lindsay Devon, was born. My wife dropped out of San Francisco State University after a couple of semesters but I completed the bachelor's degree requirements in 1984. I found a job in finance as a pricing analyst with the Dalmo Victor Company in Belmont, CA and made Pricing Supervisor in four years. We were bought out in 1990 and I was absorbed into Litton's Applied Technology Division in Silicon Valley during 1991 as a Pricing /Proposal Analyst. My marriage fell apart in 1993 and I had virtual sole custody of my three daughters until I was laid off in 1995 and moved to Dadeville, Alabama early 1996. I met Sandy and my 4th daughter Brittany Taylor in July of 1996 and we have been together ever since. We were married on top of Cheaha Mountain in May of 2005. We have a house two blocks from Lake Martin in East Central Alabama where we have been living since 1998. When I arrived in Alabama I went to work to work for the Carquest Auto Parts store with my father in Dadeville. When they fired me in late 1998 I began delivering newspapers for the Opelika-Auburn News and the USAToday. I worked 7 days a week for the next eleven years. Late last year several of my online websites started producing enough profit to offset dropping the paper routes. In March I started collecting Social Security. I'm spending a lot of time in Plant City, FL helping care for my octogenarian parents. My 17 year daughter will graduate early from Reeltown High School in Reeltown, Alabama. Anyone who is interested in talking about new times or old times please contact me at dvon51 on google male. Update 03/14/2023 Well hello again. I turned 72 in January so I have turned into an old fart just like everybody else. I've been busy since I wrote last. I was a newspaper hauler and home delivery carrier for just short of 12 years. I finally had to give it up in 2010 due to worsening lower back issues. I retired at 62 and started collecting Social Security. I began applying for VA disability at my fathers insistance since he was making a nice paycheck with 100% disability. I filed my first claim and have submitted additional claims and appeals up until February of this year (2023) when they finally agreed that I was too busted to hold "meaning employment". My wife, Sandy, and I bought a Class C Motorhome and have been cruising Alabama and Tennessee when we aren't babysitting grandchildren. It has been fun exploring new places and feeling the sunshine. I pray that every one of you is happy and healthy. I am still dvon51 on google's mail system so give me a holler.
