Diana Reed's Story

Life Diana Reed Strommen here... Where to begin... After MWHS '73, went to St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. Although my parents did not allow me to major in music, I was active in the program as principal soloist of their renowned touring choir, making great contacts. After college, I suffered a car accident, and postponed attending Indiana Univ on scholarship until 1980. Got the B.Mus, but paused on the M.Mus Degree to earn the "MRS" degree IN '82. We moved to St Paul, where Doug worked as an actuary. Two jobs and two beautiful babies later, I won contracts to sing in Wash, DC, but we then moved to WI, where I finished my Masters of Music Education Degree later in 1994. Wisconsin was good. There, I invested energy in home schooling our "gifted and talented" kids. Soon enough, I did the music thing: oratorio soloist, teacher, adjudicator, clinician, managed the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orch & Chorus, developed a concert ministry, generated recordings, and enjoyed both conducting and coordinating church music. I won the prize of having the most part-time jobs! Our two kids, my first "young voice" experiments... like it or not, became treble singers. Andrea, our oldest, chose jazz sax and piano as her principal instruments, and played professionally as a woodwind specialist in Georgia. Andrea worked in instrument repair on the side before achieving her automotive tech degree. After 5 years of shop experience, she is now teaching automotive tech fulltime at Paulding High School, and lives in her own home in Dallas, GA. Jon studied Suzuki cello through high school and a terrible time with voice change. His schedule at Georgia Tech may have required him to park the cello at home, however, he did not leave his music too far behind; apparently, Jon was in high demand in the Karaoke bars during his summer abroad. He graduates with his B.S. in Business Management degree in May of 2008, and has accepted a position with Equifax in Alpharetta, GA. After our move to Atlanta in ...Expand for more
2000, I administrated a huge church youth program. God had me on quite an amazing journey! Fearing music withdrawal... I immediately joined the select ASO Chamber Chorus, and semi-professional core. Our long seasons and travel keep me vocally active, but I no longer have the heart for competition I once had. Our Grammy recordings and selective gigs are helping me to sustain decent vocal facility. In 2006 I left my church administrative position to return to private studio teaching that I had missed so badly after moving here from Wisconsin. To further celebrate mid-life, I obtained my professional SDI Scuba instructor. status Doug and I have enjoyed blowing bubbles under the sea in many places of the world, and joined the rank of volunteer divers necessary to clean the exhibits of the Georgia Aquarium. Then, in early 2007 I was offered my first two public sector career opportunities since college graduation: the first was to assume the middle choir choral position in the largest Middle School in America, the other was in psychopharmacology research. After much deliberation, I accepted the position of Director of Clinical Research for the Institute for Behavioral Medicine, utilizing my original B.A. Degree from St. Olaf. The position, research division and my staff have expanded tremendously in the last calendar year. As a result, I have all but left studio teaching in 2008. In summers, we hope to continue to travel north to my family's cabin in Three Lakes, WI. Although I returned to the DesPlaines area once to bury my mom several years back, I have not returned to the halls of Maine West since 1976. Perhaps the next reunion? I might get to the St. Olaf College Christmas Festival in December 2008 or beyond. Until I see you again, please forgive my fumblings of school days gone by, and any harm I have done along the way. It's nice to be almost grown up now, and better to be forgiven. Blessings to each of you, your families, and wishes for an exciting and abundant life. Diana
