Diane's Story
Hey to all you Cougars out there !!
Wow- it's been 40 years as I write this . So here's my story - I married my HS sweetheart (1974), Nick Sakezles, class of 1970. Some of you may remember him. We had one child, a son..That marriage ended in 1984. I was living in Sarasota, FL at the time & moved back home to the old neighborhood.
I had graduated nursing school- YES, I SAID NURSING !!! & starting work at Baptist Hospital. I actually ran into quite a few of you there & even took care of some of your families.
I met my current husband there- he was a carpenter at the time , doing construction at the hospital.. I had my son, he had 2 younger than mine ( so we had 7,5 & 2 ) We had agreed on one with the STRICT stipulation that if it wasn't a girl , that was it. You're right a we have FOUR BOYS !!!
Our men are grown 32, (Owns his own specialty T- Shirt company) , 30, a 1st SGT in the Army for 13 years, 27 y/o owns his own business making " stuff out of sheet metal" & is a graduate of NASCAR tech school, & the baby ,23, is a college grad with a degree in Criminal Justice- works for Lowe's , trying to get into Loss Prevention.
Two beautiful granddaughters - finally got my girls - age 4 yrs & 9 mos.
My husband is a Construction Superintendent hoping to retire next year. I retired in 2009 . 35 years in Nursing wore my body out- I had the opportunity to hang up my stethoscope & I took it !!
Today, I walk with my dog ( an Australian Shepherd) and sometimes my Grand dog (my son's dog)- a beautiful Border Collie. I like to sew & ESP quilt !
We moved to NC- a nice town- about 30 miles north of Charlotte in 2000. We built our dream house on a 3 1/2 pi...Expand for more
ece of land and life is GREAT.
Sorry this is so long , but it's been 40 yrs, right ?
Sorry to end on a sad note.in case no one knew - my dearest, friend, who I loved so much in our HS years ( not romantically), my best girlfriend, Mary Sobeck passed away many years ago. If anyone had been in touch with her, please let me know.. I tried to reconnect after my divorce but she wasn't receptive. And lastly, my HS love, Nick Sakezles died in 2010. Way too soon.
God Bless you all- I would love to hear from a fellow Cougar ! Peace Out Man !
Update: August 2022: So now it’s been FIFTY years!!! We just celebrated our 50th reunion. I got sidelined one week before the celebration. I got diagnosed with heart valve disease. But my fellow Cougars did not leave me out. I was blessed with many well wishes and a box full of memorabilia making me feel as if I was right there with you. In June I was able to participate in a tour of our school and that was a lot of fun. Many things have changed but our Cougar spirit has not diminished ! For me, personally after 32 years of marriage, that marriage dissolved and I am now a single girl. The good part of that is I am now free living the beach life again. Something I had longed for since leaving Fort Lauderdale in 2000. I live in Fort Myers, I’m not crazy about being back in the city and the traffic but Sanibel Island is my happy place. I still have my senior dog, my best friend and companion. I have been reconnecting with some fellow Cougars and “going back to the future”
If anybody wants to reconnect, please do!
