Dianne's Story

Edited 4/18/2023: See me as Dianne MULQUEEN & also as Dianne SULLIVAN for my different, earlier Photos. Classmates had me & my photos under both names. (Don't ask. I don't understand either.) GROWING UP IN BETHPAGE: I had an extended family, many family friends & Friends/Acquaintances from Bethpage Schools: Kindergarten-Bethpage H.S.& Girl Scouts. Most memorable for me because of our frequency of spending time together or positive memorable interactions are: Kathy Rockhill, Pat (Curcio) Infurna, Pat Sciavetta, Carolyn Sisia, Mario Merkle, Judy (Babula) Nocella, Diana (Burt) Mikol, Peter Vandercreek, Eve Schneider, Ira Ziegler, Lou Sciarica, Jen Black & more. My Bethpage school years included 13 years of old Acquaintances from Kindergarten through H.S.; from my living on Cambrige Street through Nibbe Lane. I remember my Family's friends' children Kathy Rockhill, Al Bellini & his sister Barbara. Ken Black I knew most of them from when I lived on Cambrige Street when I was age 2-6 years & at Kindergarten. MY FOLKS: My parents were "salt of the earth" kind people. They cared for me so well. My folks were very dutiful in caring for my Grandparents for 15 years. (Most all of my Elementary & H.S. Years) They gave up living in our home on Cambridge Street to help my Grandmother care for my Grandfather on Nibbe Lane. Grandpa had Parkinsons Disease & there was no treatments for Parkinsons then. After Grandpa passed Grandma (Nanny) wanted my folks company & help so my folks felt duty bound to stay at her home. We spent the rest of my School & College years there. My Mom so wanted her own home. She & my Dad finally did purchase their own home within months of me graduating from college in 1963. My folks were of very modest means, but paid for my entire SUNY OSWEGO College experience: Room & Board, books, living expenses. . My folks were so generous to me! I've been forever grateful to them. They were also so kind to my Friends during their entire Lives. After College & after I went to San Francisco, CA I always thought of their Central Blvd. home as Home. I guess because my Folks lived there longest & they were so happy & comfortable there. My Dad lived at the Central Blvd Home for 30 years, from 1963-1993 until he died. My Mother from 1963 until she died in 5/2005. 42 years? Bethpage provided me strong, stable roots. I went from before Kindergarten through 12th Grade in Bethpage. I enjoyed Brownies, Girl Scouts, H.S. & many of the extra Curriculum Activities provided. I remember & appreciate that most of my H.S. Teachers were quite good at their profession. I remember Mr. Duarte, who taught Art & was Year Book Advisor. He recently passed (2/2023) I remember him as a kind, affirmative teacher & man. It makes me smile to remember History in Mr. Doremus class in H.S. He was astonished (as was I, when he mentioned to me that I had achieved a 98% on the REGENTS exam.) I guess he only remembered calling out in class to "Grandjean, Rockhill & Mulqueen," "Stop Talking'." But I've always been interested in & enjoyed History. Mr. Doremus was a genuinely knowledgable, accomplished & kind man. He ascended to become Dr. Doremus, Superintendent of SHOREHAM-WADING RIVER SCHOOL DISTRICT. **************BETHPAGE HS teachers encouraged me. My Bethpage friends affirmed me. My H.S. gal friends taught me what good friendships could be. For me, H.S. was a very wholesome time in my life. ............COLLEGE: Right after H.S. I went onto college at SUNY Oswego, upstate N.Y. on Lake Ontario, near Syracuse. (400 miles away!) "The Friendly College on the Lake." It was a long drive & before Cell phones! Those 4 college years at Oswego were enlightening, broadening & fulfilling. 'Twas a wonderful, experience. SUNY Oswego was a very wholesome, lovely, encouraging environment. SUNY Oswego's Mission provided excellent preparation for teaching Elementary School. I had dedicated professors who were committed to encouraging "Students to become all they are capable of Being." Oswego's Mission was at that time dedicated to Undergrad Education, but in later years became part of the N.Y. SUNY University System. Oswego State encouraged students to explore, take on responsibility and to think independently, both academically & in extracurricular activities for future USA Citizenry. Oswego did this especially well for women students. Oswego was ahead of its time with encouraging women and minorities. I met & roomed with Pat Brannen at our Sorority. She became my Lifelong Friend. We shared many personal values, future ambitions, intellectual, emotional growth, & Civil Rights endeavors. Most of all we were "Kindred Spirits." A surprise to me I was voted to be Sorority President for 2 terms! Our Sorority was ahead of its time in that it was the 1st of the Oswego, perhaps SUNY Colleges, to be open to those who were Jewish or Black. We definitely chose to have a "No Hazing Policy." It is dumbfounding to me that "Hazing" still exists around the USA. Stupid, Stupid, Stupid! SUNY Oswego & my L.I. Kings Point Academy Dating experiences opened the world for me. --‐---- AFTER COLLEGE GRADUATION: Summer of 1963 I caravanned by car to San Francisco with a few College gal acquaintances. I guess I was in search of Exploration rather than Adventure. In those days most gals did not venture so far from home. And that was BEFORE CELL PHONES! Thank goodness for AAA TRIP TIC that outlined our trip. Each Evening we'd meet up at a previouly arranged City Motel. We spent about 5 weeks in San Francisco. It was a very exhilarating time. San Francisco was so very lovely, sophisticated. It was a perfect place for me to temporarily Land! Its young people were so interesting & growing with the times. We had the good fortune to find acquaintances to show us around San Francisco, it's iconic places, environs & its new & upcoming scenes. With such assistance I had good opportunities to explore SAN FRANCISCO. Our 1st Bush Street apartment was right near the Financial District. After only 1 month, my College Acquaintance, Judy, & I remained in California. We moved to Clayton & Haight Street in S.F.. That was a few years BEFORE the Haight-Ashbury "Summer of Love." CLAYTON & HAIGHT were soon to become the central area for the "Summer of Love," in the Haight/Ashbury District. But we had not a clue at that time. What did we know? Thank goodness for Good Luck, Good Timing & natural wholesome "Good Girlness!" I really enjoyed visiting & exploring San Francisco & it's Iconic places. GROWN UP LIFE & MY CAREER BEGINS: I found a WONDERFUL TEACHING JOB: I "FELL INTO MY "CALLING." (For which I had fortunately been trained.) By end of August 1963 I secured my 1st Teaching Position in San Ramon Village, CA My roommate, Judy & I, moved South of San Francisco to the Mountain View, Palo Alto Area. My 1st wonderful Teaching job was teaching 1st Graders in SAN RAMON Village near Dublin, CA. What a Joy to go to work each day. The children were delightful. The Administration was dedicated & well educated. (Such a fortunate experience for me. One gal teacher from there became a friend throughout my Marital & Childrearing years. In 1964 we moved to nearby Palo Alto, CA with 2 other wonderful gal roommates from Washington State, who also were teachers. One of whom I still remain Friends these so many years later. . She's said to me., "I lived the life you should have had!" In early 1965, while debating whether to marry, I had given her the Military/Defense Department Application that I had planned on using to teach overseas (in Germany) She took it & taught in Germany at the Military Defense Base. She married Military. Her husband ultimately became Director of the West Point History Department for over 20+ years. He's written rather prolifically & they have traveled to Europe often. She became a School Psycholgist. 2nd GREAT TEACHING JOB-TEACHING 1ST GRADERS in Santa Clara California.....1966-1969: In August 1966 I married a Stanford University Grad Student so I changed School Districts so I would not have as long a commute. We lived at Stanford University married student housing for a couple of years until he completed his Ph.D. in Engineering Mechanics. I really enjoyed my Teaching at Montegue School at Santa Clara Unified, living at Stanford & enjoyed my new Mother in Law. Although my husband did have a National Science Foundation Scholarship for Stanford, I did financially support us until he finished his Ph.D. in early Sept. 1969. NEW HOME & MY NEW FAMILY: 9/1969 we moved to San Jose & purchased a lovely brand new new home. My Teaching Salary financially helped us to purchase that home. I hired a Landscape Architect. Husband installed the Water Sprinkler system. Then I landscaped the front, side & backyard to my perfection. Thus I now found my 2nd "Calling," - "GARDENING." 3RD "CALLING" was MOTHERHOOD: I retired from Teaching (for 10 years.) to have & rear my 2 wonderful children. I knew my Daughter was very bright & destined to be a Dr. or a Ph.D. from her age of 3 years. I encouraged her, in subtle ways, but her determination & intellect are hers alone. She's become a respected & successful Scientist in the Microbiology Field. She's currently Director of her Department. My Son has long loved swimming, cycling & running. He's been a Triathlete, for years. He became one of the first Certified Triathlon Coaches. My Son has continued Coaching Triathlon & now also teaches Swim & Running at Oregon State College in Corvallis, OR. His wif...Expand for more
e is Coordinator of Fitness/Kinesthetics/Exercise at the same College. MARRIAGE DISSOLVES: 1976- 1980. Everyone thought we were the "Perfect Couple," but after his many omissions & Red Flags I realized it was I holding the marriage together. Despite Counseling we finalized Divorced in 1980. (It was an unfortunate, unnecessarily rancorous, repeatedly litigious Divorce. But when one party has more power, conections, money & fewer scruples that can happen. I trusted for far too long! Husband "Gaslighted" & defrauded/threatened me into selling our Jointly owned House! ) MASTERS DEGREE 1977-1979--UNIVERSITY OF SANTA CLARA, CA: I Earned my Masters Degree 1979 from UNIVERSITY of SANTA CLARA. I was surprised & delighted that after having been out of academia for a long time, I still "Had It.," I still loved learning & was affirmed by my professors at Santa Clara. RELOCATION AWAY FROM SAN JOSE, CA: When most of the UNNECESSARY Nastiness was over the children & I Relocated away from San Jose. I certainly could not afford to purchase a house in "Silicon Valley" anymore. The area had appreciated mightily! As much as I wanted to permanently relocate to N.Y. or Connecticut, I knew my "Former" would continue the absurd & frightening Litigation should I take the children "Out of State." That definitely would have "Wiped me Out!" So I purchased my own home in CA where I could afford to live. I realized I could obtain an Elementary Teaching or Resource Specialist job most anywhere with my Credentials & Recommendations. Although I was aware of the different cultures between Northern & Southern CA I had not been familiar with the very conservative, RW, "Anti-Government" "Culture" of Central CA. What a shock! Continues to this day. I felt & experienced aa early as 1989-1997 the early rumblings of what culminated into the Jan. 6 2020 insurection upon our USA Capitol! BUT I do love my neighborhood & feel proud that I was able to find a brand New home! . Again I found a Landscape Designer & I landscaped my new home. It's now been 36 years in MY home. I TAUGHT FOR 23 YEARS: & AM A GRANDMOTHER: Both my Children married. I'm a Grandmother of 3 boys. Two are in their 20s the youngest, my Son's is 6 years old! SETTLED IN CENTRAL CALIFORNIA AFTER DIVORCE: LATER CHILDREN WERE OFF TO COLLEGE: A NEW LIFE: After divorce and my children off to college & out of the house, I was more free to join organizations such as Sierra Club,, Adventure Club, etc., meet new people and date again. I began more Nature & History activities & traveling, I especially enjoyed Camping, Hiking, Kayaking, Cross Country Skiing, Back Packing, Snow Shoeing. & continue to explore the Yosemite & Monterey regions of CA. I was fortunate to meet some simpatico Intelligent Nature lovers in Sierra Club and Adventure Club.. Angel Island in the San Francisco Bay with Vistas from the Golden Gate across San Francisco to the Bay Bridge was a magical place, Sierra Club was able to get special permits to stay overnight in the Civil War Officers Quarters! I've been there several times. That was a favorite overnight trip. We also frequented Monterey, Point Lobos, Big Sur, Yosemite, Hetch Hetchy and many more environs in CA. So Despite the RW Oppressive Conservativism I found some Intelligent, Talented, "Simpatico" acquaintances. I so enjoyed the variety of people beauty and adventures to be had here within areas of CA I had not explored in depth. My home has been my refuge & my true Me. I've been fortunate to have enjoyed several meaningful, fun male relationships over the years since my divorce. I met interesting, highly educated, accomplished men, a few became serial delightful companions. During quieter times, approximately 8 of us from our local Yokuts Group of Sierra Club would have monthly Balderdash Pot Luck nights. Balderdash is a game which was especially fun for those of us who enjoyed Language & wit. The game required attempting to sound confident while saying something that seemed absolutely plausible but UNTRUE! We had witty fun times. Thus the name "Balderdash"-- which means "nonsense," "foolishness," in other words to say or hear something that was intended to fool the other. ---LIFE: I think my life has evolved or occurred in various chapters, each with its own unique experiences. Not a life I would have expected. ( In H.S. I don't think I ever seriously thought more than a couple years ahead.) but it's been an interesting & unique Life from the conventional life that most of us probably would have expected when we were in High School. (Of course no life is without its challenges) But not much was expected of females while we were in H.S. ( I definitely I can not recall anything expected of me!) I'm glad I was able to have been an accomplished, effective Elementary School Teacher and for 12 years a Resource Specialist, I then went back to teach 1st Grade, Kindergarten and 3rd Grade, My Skills & experience paid off. I had been encouraged & had been offered to become a "Mentor Teacher" in 1981, but having the responsibility of 2 children I knew I could not spend anymore time at work & away from them. In the years 1980-1988. I had been encouraged by my Principal in 1987 to apply for the Vice Principal Job Opening. Again, an odd twist. I had not previously known of the opening. Was away with the kids at San Jose Family Camp, near Yosemite, when I checked my Home ANSWERING Machine Messages. (That was one of several "Red Flags" at that School & School District, being notified so belatedly by the one woman who "Fasioned herself as Vice Principal.") I felt I could not/would not interrupt our week away on summer vacation to drive back to Interview.. I was again at same school 1991 (although I had yearly, requested a transfer to a different school within the District.) when two different "Mentor Teachers" suggested & Recommended that I apply to be a "Mentor Teacher." It was Tempting, but I already knew who had applied, & knew they were less than qualified, but "Connected." . I also knew by then that I was working in a sneaky, fraydulent "VIPERS DEN." So I declined. I wanted NO MORE DRAMA in my Life." I guess I was fortunate to fall into my "Calling." I was able to begin my career before I had married, ( retired for 10 years while rearing my children.) Then after the divorce I was able to begin again & support myself (and my children) without Spousal Support. My own new home has provided me stability, comfort and cheer. I've learned that many of us were women of our times, some of us ahead of our times. Being ahead of one's time was/is not always appreciated by others then or now, but for me it often offered adventure, knowlege, insight & satisfaction . After hearing many female and male life stories, I finally have the insight that each path has its own benefits and challenges. What's the line? ... "A path divided in the woods, I took the one less traveled and that's made all the difference. " Seems accurate for me. I HOPE YOU ALL ARE WELL. SEEMS ODD THAT WE ARE THE ELDER, Elders NOW. I'm now 81 years! ...and so are most of you. I've had Tears & Heartache for those who have Passed on. I especially miss & ache at the Passing of my very Best, Lifelong Friend, Pat Brannen Pickens who I met in college. We worked, played, philosophized, & were lazy together for many years. For most all Summers after college, during the times I lived in California I'd go back East for a month or so. & I'd visit my Folks in Bethpage. I always spent 4-7 days during that time visiting Pat, & her wonderful husband, Bill, at their home in SAG HARBOR. We'd " "Beach," Explore lovely areas & eat Lobster. I am so pleased that Pat & Bill had a very loving, "True Love" marriage. That brought me Peace for each of them when they each passed. Our mutual friend, Yvonne Carroll Preshe, notified me so that I was able to view Bill Pickens Memorial Service Online. He was so respected & reverred in SAG HARBOR, an honor so truly deserved. *********************** Am considering to not resubscribing to Classmates in approximately 4/2023, unless they have me on Auto-Suscribe. I am on Facebook under Dianne Mulqueen Sullivan. My security feature is "Friends Only.' So if you do seek me out, you would have to FB Message me to "REQUEST" to "Friend Me." It's been a bit of fun catching up with old Bethpage friends: JUDY BABULA NOCELLA, PETER VAN DERCREEK & MAUREEN KELLY MILLER. Some Bethpage H.S. FB Friends post a few words, others put up photos of & greetings to/from their family & friends. Peter Vandercreek is still the nicest guy & has enjoyed wonderful success as an Artist & Art Teacher. He has a most insightful Sense of Humor! Of course he's been long retired, but he's very proud of his Family. There's been some conversation between those of us who mutually knew one another in H.S. This may feel odd for those of my other FB Friends who know me from my post College, early CA years & later. We've had very different experiences than those from Bethpage H.S. & who live on L.I. But I am often reminded how much I miss L.I. Beaches: Jones Beach, Center Island, Sag Harbor & East Hampton Beaches. Nothing like them here in NorthCA! On FB I put up a few family photos, some Comedic Videos of James Colbert. Political, History & Philosophic posts. I can be reached by Email at: Sullivandianne2012 at gmail dot com TAKE CARE ALL. Prayers for those who have Passed On & for those who are still with us but suffer from Maladies. DIANNE (Mulqueen) Sullivan 4/18/2023
