Dick's Story

Left school; went to RIC for a semester. Flunked out. Bummed around, job-to-job for a couple of years then went to work for Uncle Sam in a civilian 4-year apprenticeship program at Quonset Point in Sept. 1963. Finally met the girl of my dreams in Aug. 65. Graduated from the apprenticeship program as certified Aircraft Engine Mechaniic in Sept. 67. Promptly got my behind drafted and joined Uncle Sam's Illustrious Army in Dec 67. Went to Basic Jan/Feb 68, got leave in March and married the girl of my dreams and we are together still, 51 years later. Spent rest of 68 & most of 69 at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, GA where our first son was born Richard the 3rd. (am I bad or what). Went to Nam in Nov. 69 and came back Nov. 70. 'Nough said about that! Spent the next 38 years working and raising the family. We had another son, Jason, in 72. I went back to school, nights in '74 and graduated with BS in '81 (Damn, wish I'd done it back in the 60's). Quit Uncle Sam and went to work for GE Aircraft Engines in 85 and stayed there till I retired in 08. Both sons are now married and long gone. We have one grandkid as of this writing. We retired in Jan 08, spent a couple of years traveling and fixing the house up for selling; wating for the market to rebound. Got sick of waiting, sold the house, and here we are in La Grange, KY, or as I like to say, "Back in America!" This place is just like RI was when we were kids. Heck! The train goes right through the middle of town (just like it used to in Centerdale), 3 to 4 times a day and everyone just stops, waits, watches and talks to each other! There are two main North/South streets and one main East/West street and they control traffic at both intersections with 4-way stop signs, and, by golly, it works! Well, here it is June 24, 2018 and time for an update. Well, moved into our new place ...Expand for more
in Kentucky Aug 4th 2010 and wouldn't ya just know....I had a heart attack on the 24th! My-o-my, 2 stents to unblock an artery, a few months of rehab, and I am better than ever, just have a couple more parts than before! Well, what can I say except, "Heed the early warning signs as I did; we are the Class of '61 not '0-1-1!" I work out at the "Y" 4-5 times a week now, eating better (although we were eating OK before), but finally gave up smokes! Yep! After 53 years of good old Pall Malls I now have over 2 1/2 years since I quit.. It was in the ER while they were triaging me for the heart attack I was having and they were making their bedside small talk and asked me if I smoked. I said, " Used to, but I quit." Doc said, "Good! When did you quit?" I replied, " Five minutes ago!!" (^_^) So here I am, forutnate to still be with my loving and beautiful wife and ready for the next pitch life throws! Be happy today; who knows what tomorrow will bring! Had a great time at the reunion; my only regret was that there was not more time to get to talk with everyone. I didn't even get to talk with a couple of my real old friends whom I hadn't seen since graduation. Hey! Att the 60th, right? I plan on still being here! Well, here we are, 75 and chugging along! Had a knee replacement in July and it is not going well. 3 months and I still have swelling, pain, and restricted movement. will see the Doc on the 18th and give him the ultimatum; fix it or I go elsewhere and spread the word to stay away. But, I have thought for the 60th reunion we should have a category of "Most Replacement Parts!" Me? I'm minus tonsils, wear glasses, wear hearing aids, two stents, two hernia meshes, and a new knee. Getting old is not for the weak! See all y'all (that's the plural of y'all) at the 60th in 2021 if the Grim Reaper doesn't get me before then! :-)
