Dixie's Story

I've lived in Lincoln, NE, Littleton, CO, Omaha, NE, back to Lincoln, NE, then Westminster, CO, Colorado Springs, CO, and my final of 24 moves to Lincoln, NE again. I am the mother of 6 children we raised (lost one twin) 4 sons and 2 daughters ages 38 to 58. We have 15 grandchildren as of today and 1 great-granddaughter. I have my MS in Special Education, am retired from teaching after over 20 years, and I am not substitute teaching in District 11 anymore. My husband, Paul, passed away in 2014 and was a retired home builder/land developer with an engineering degree. My Paul passed in May, 2014 and I returned to Lincoln in 2017. My eldest daughter lives here and my other children are in Wisconsin, Colorado, and Seattle. I also I read, walk, exercise on my bike in my little office, take classes that interest me, go to P.E.O., am active in my church and find a myriad of fun things to go to and then visit children and grandchildren in Colorado, Washington, and Wisconsin as well as friends and family. My brother and his wife of 60 years this year live in Ventura, California. Most of the houses in their area burned. They were two houses away. I am only a day away from all of the three children in Colorado and one in Wisconsin and the one in Seattle flies in from time to time as he has children here also. I hated leaving Colorado as I love it so but this is the best choice for me. I have moved ever since before I was one and have moved many, many times since. You'd think my dad and husband were in the military. My dad was with Western Union telegraph. I am hoping this is my last move as I am getting old and tired! My children say they will hel...Expand for more
p me get it done though if I ever sort down all the boxes. I did that when we moved here from Westminster but it is evident it was not quite enough. I have finished packing all the boxes I can and still be able to live day to day with a few dishes and cooking things and clothes to wear. I have sent 5 loads to charity and will be sending at least one more. My grandsons move out into their own apartment the first part of June. They were taking a couch and a loveseat but we will see. If they don't, I don't know if I will take them or give them to charity. I am NOT a garage sale person! I have thrown away 27 big black bags of trash. Probably should have done more but I am so sentimental. For those of you that went to Beatrice High, I left in seventh grade when my dad was transferred. I am Jim Wyman's little sister and 6 1/2 years younger than him. Then I went to Avenue B in Council Bluffs, Iowa, for 7th and 8th grade, and then moved to Duluth, Minnesota. I went to East High School there for 9th grade and then to Central High School for 10th and 11th. Two weeks into my senior year, Dad was transferred to Des Moines, Iowa, where I graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School. I attended Drake University and then studied at the University of Nebraska (Journalism) in Lincoln, Nebraska, and then in 1981, while the mother of four and having two more children earned my Special Education degree there after we had moved back to Lincoln. I got my masters at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado, after we moved to Westminster, Colorado. I have told my children I am never moving again. I only leave here on a stretcher or a pine box.
