Don's Story
Life
Married to Georgina (Gina) Joyner (Jefferson 65) since 1964. We lived in our motor home for two years after we retired in 2012. For the first two years we wintered in Florida. After our 50th anniversary we decided to go West for the winter.. We decided that the Phoenix area was a better place to spend our winters than Florida, We bought a a home in a retirement community in Apache Junction, AZ. While we liked our unit and the park we decided it was too small. After looking around we bought a manufactured home in an all new section of another retirement community. After living in there for a few years we again decided that it was too small and bought a still larger manufactured home. We still had to put down our dog, Mac last year but we still have our two kitties Tina and Merle.
We have two children. Our daughter Tammy and her husband they have four children. Our son Ken and his wife has three children. We joined the Des Moines Big Brother Program in 1968. ....Expand for more
Our little brother Paul and his family are still in our lives. We have had five exchange students over the years, Switzerland, Russia, the Czech Republic, Hong Kong and Brazil.
I spent four years in the Marine Corps (aviation electronics technician), one year in Viet Nam. Worked for AT&T in Des Moines for 7 years as a Communications Craftsman. Decided to go to college, graduated from the University of Iowa (BBA) 1977. Commisioned in the Army, attended Airborne and Ranger schools. Spent four years in armor, one tour in Germany (Augsburg and Kitzingen). Went to flight school, flew helicopters (UH-1, OH-58 & AH-1) for 12 years, particitated in Operation Just Cause (Panama) and Desert Storm, retired in 1993. Spent the next 20 years working for government contractors training soldiers for the Army.
Would probably describe my life as: usually challenging, often times frustrating, occasionally rewarding but almost always interesting.
My favorite saying is: Nothing is easy!
