Don's Story

After High School, I graduated from Ft. Scott CC. In fall of '66 attended Pittsburg State, and JayDee Wolfe and I were planning to join the Air Force, then he died in a car accident at Christmas. So in February 1967 I joined the US Navy, got sick, was discharged with 100% disability after nearly dying and 9 months in the San Diego Balboa Med Ctr. I returned to Pittsburg, Ks returned to College and got married in May 1969 to Joy Henne. We celebrated our 40 anniversary this year with a Cruise to Canada and Maine on the St. Lawrence Seaway, around to New York. My work varied from being a Math teacher for two years, an insurance agent in Wichita, KS for a few months, entered ministry and St. Paul School of Theology in KCMO in 1973. Dropped out and worked at 5 different jobs in KCMO, before getting a job with Social Security Admin. in 1978 until 1985 when I had move back to Pittsburg, had adopted two children and re-entered Seminary in KC. I am in my 24th year as a United Methodist minister. I served 3 churches in Iola, KS, two churches in Topeka, KS area for 12 years, three churches in SE KS and am serving my 3rd year at Kingman, KS. This is my best appointment and largest church of about 450 members. I hope my friends remember me as a friendly person, willing to listen to their issues, and take part in activities in school and church. I was usually a good student and worked on our family dairy farm, so sometimes came to school with the smell of the cattle barn on my jeans. I really enjoyed basketball and the teams we had in Art Frisbie years. Steve Frisbie and I still stay in touch regularly. I always wanted to be a farmer when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a dumb idea. As it turns out, they were right. I blow off steam by playing Bridge on-line with people from...Expand for more
all over the world. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have patience, courage, and prayer to be able to deal with the day-to-day. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Ed Clendening, because we were in grad and High School together and neighbors as kids, and I have lost touch with him.. Sports in local town of Kingman, and College Foot Ball and BB on TV. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel I would by one. My wife and I live in Church owned Parsonages and add on a mortgage. My dream home would be my retirement home.. I have learned from my son, Lowell, now 32, that children can grow up to be responsible, dependable and have children of their own, so that I can enjoy being a grandpa. My daughter is 28 with a 4 yr old grandson which we enjoy and love, but do not see as often as we would like. My first crush, Cathy Smiley married Gary and I think they are happy. We were in grade school and high school together. She was the first girl I tried to kiss when I was in the 4th and she was in the 2nd grades at West Liberty grade school. I took her on a date to the Fulton HS basketball game and she met Gary, but I still gave her a kiss on the way home, with my sister driving. The first girl I kissed. My first job was at unloading hay from a hayrack, where I got paid 10 dollars to roll bales off of two wagons loaded with hay. What I remember most about it is that I only worked for about 3 hours and I thought it was too much money, but Ellis Beth, Darrel Beth's dad, paid it to me anyhow. I did work for him several years after that time. I remember going to the Little Osage River for a Community Fish Fry, and all the kids made a mud slide down the high bank down into the water. The fryed fish and food was great and what fun we all had during those fish frys.
