Don's Story
I was born in Reedsburg, WI in 1957, spent a year in Wyoming and grew up in Madison WI. I attended Badger Elementary, Franklin Elementary, Lincoln Middle and La Follette High Schools. I was very involved in Student Council, The Lance, Drama Club and Forensics while at LaFollette.
I went to the UW-Madison for three semesters and then transferred to the Wisconsin School of Electronics where I graduated in 1979. I married Paula Klump in 1978.
In 1979 I started working for The Burdick Corporation in Milton, WI as a Technical Writer. Paula and I moved to Janesville, WI where we bought our first home. I left Burdick as a Product Manager in 1986 when I started working for the Lunar Corporation in Madison, WI, also as a Product Manager.
Paula and I lived in an apartment in Monona until we sold our home in Janesville and then purchased a home in McFarland. While working at Lunar I also became involved with the Madison Audubon Society, serving on its Board of Directors for seven years, four as its President. I left Lunar in 1995 as its Manager of Regulatory Affairs and Quality Assurance.
In 1995 we purchased the Green Acres Kennel Shop and moved three dogs and three senior parents from McFarland, Wisconsin to our new home and business1400 miles away in Bangor, Maine. Green Acres offers boarding, daycare, grooming, training classes, behavioral consultations and the sale of wholesome pet food and quality supplies. We have been consistently voted the best kennel, best pet store, best dog trainer and best pet groomer in the region for several years.
I am a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC), Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA), Bach Foundation Registered Animal Practitioner (BFRAP) and Associate Certified Cat Behavior Consultant (ACCBC).
Community involvement is very important to me, and I was honored to have served on the Board of the Madison Audubon Society from 1989 through 1995, four years as its President; while we lived in Wisconsin. After we had spent a year in Maine, I was asked to serve on the Board of the Bangor Humane Society, which I did for fifteen years, five as its President.
I became involved in Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT) in 1998 when I was asked to serve on the new Education Committee by Dr. Ian Dunbar. I served on that committee until we launched the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers in 2001. I was first elected to a three-year term on the APDT Board of Trustees in 2002 when I also served as Board Secretary. In 2005 I was elected to a second three-year term on the APDT BOT and also served as Vice Chair in 2005 and 2006, and as APDT Chair in 2007. In 2009 I was asked to serve on a new APDT Education Committee which I did until it became the Education Advisory Group in 2013, where ...Expand for more
I served until 2015. I was again elected to the APDT BOT in 2011, serving as Vice Chair until I became Chair in July of 2011. I was reelected BOT Chair for 2012 and served as Board Treasurer in 2013. I retired from the APDT Board at the end of 2013 but continued to serve as Chair of the BOT Nominations Committee and the Education Advisory Group until 2015. In October of 2014, I was recognized by the APDT as the APDT Dr. Ian Dunbar Member of the Year.
In 2016 I was elected to the Board of The Green Gem Healing Oasis and appointed to the Advocacy Committee of The Pet Professional Guild (PPG).
Continuing education is very important to me. I have attended many APDT conferences and many other seminars and workshops. I continually emphasize the importance of continuing education to my staff and have successfully mentored seven of them to achieve their CPDT-KA and have more working towards that goal.
I have presented seminars on pet behavior, dog training, pet nutrition and Bach Flower Remedies in Canada, the Caribbean, Japan, and throughout the USA.
Providing education to pet owners is also important to me. In 2004 and I was asked to produce and co-host a weekly radio show all about pets. The Woof Meow Show focuses on educating people about dogs, cats, their behavior, health care, nutritional needs and their relationship with their people. The show airs every Saturday from 9 AM to 10 AM on The Pulse AM620, WZON, and WKIT HD3. Additionally, you can listen to the show via their online stream or on your smartphone or tablet with the free WZON 620 AM app. Podcasts of the show are available after the show airs at the show website and at the Apple iTunes store.
I write a monthly column for the Down East Dog News and write and edit a blog about pets and their care. Just search for words, woofs and meows dot com.
My wife Paula and I have been fortunate to share our lives with ten dogs, seven of them rescues and six rescue cats. From a 10lb Cairn Terrier to a 90lb Alaskan Malamute, they have each had their unique personalities and have taught us their special lessons. Our Cairn Terrier Gus was instrumental in leading us to the pet care services industry and the exploration of holistic and complementary health care and nutrition for our pets. My Golden Tikken taught me more than I can explain about accepting a dog for who they are and further reinforced our exploration of complementary healthcare and nutrition. Tikken was with us for sixteen wonderful years. We currently live with one dog and two cats; Muppy (a 5 y/o Golden Retriever/Cocker Spaniel mix, a new addition as of May 1, 2013), Boomer (a 2 y/o rescue cat that joined us in August of 2015) and Thelma (a former barn cat that is Green Acres feline retail associate, who has been with us since 2001).
