Don's Story

Who is Bro. Don? Let me start out by saying Bro. Don Ivey is different from most pastors and praise God that he is. His approach to ministering to the church is positive, upbeat and he excels in relational ministry. He is also gifted with the ability of having you crying one moment and laughing the next. Born July 27th, 1950 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at which time due to a blood clot on his brain the doctors gave him very little of hope of surviving. But, thanks to God's leading, a doctor that specialized in this area was discovered and she was able to dissolve the clot. So when you see our beloved pastor, what you see is the result of that miracle. Bro. Don moved with his mother and brother to Dallas in 1957 after his parents divorced. As a young teenager he began to show interest in music and picked up playing the guitar. In his younger years he played in several garage bands when he fell in love with country music and the style of Willie Nelson. For many years he played with the Trinity River Band from the Pleasant Grove area. On September 6, 1968, he married his high school sweetheart from H. Grady Spruce High School, Patricia (Harley) Ivey. Today, they have two sons Richard and Marquis and 4 grandsons. At the age of 27, while attending a small church in Pleasant Grove, he realized that his life was missing something. The emptiness he felt was the place that Jesus Christ wanted to occupy. During this time, on a Friday night during a service he asked Jesus to come in his life. For a while, like most, he walked the center line and continued playing his music and struggling with his spirituality. After a long period of desperation he finally let God take full control of his life and mu...Expand for more
sic. He gave up the night club scene and became sold out to God. After a few years he met Dale Halyard owner and manager of the Singing Halyards. He was asked to play bass guitar for the group which he did for over a year. When leaving the Singing Halyards he joined the Singing Christianaires playing bass guitar and also singing bass for many years. He later organized the Born Again Quartet at which time he was introduced to what would soon become his best friend Bro. Floyd Freeman. In 1984 both Bro. Don and Bro. Floyd were asked to come to Beltline Baptist Church in Garland to assist Pastor Dean Rodgers and that’s when his ministry really began. Feeling the call into God’s ministry he surrendered his life to preach the gospel and served as Assistant Pastor at Beltline Baptist for several years. In December 1991 he was called as pastor at Grace Baptist Church in Garland, Texas and served there for 12 years. Bro. Don was called to pastor Long Creek Baptist Church Sunnyvale, Texas in 2003. Since that time he has served the congregation well and has lead the church through many changes and building projects. His openness and love for the membership has seen an increase in church membership and programs. He has a special, God-given style of preaching that will make you want to cry one moment but have you laughing your head off the next. His preaching is not only spiritual it’s also uplifting and entertaining. Never attended Mesquite High but I knew a lot that did. Mike Rouse and Edwina Stanglin was very good friends. Mike was killed in the early 70's and I would like to hear from Edwina. Never attended Bryan Adams but had good friend that did (Marsha Blount) would love to hear from her.
