Don's Story

Life Eighteen days after graduating from San Lorenzo High School on June 11, 1959, I was enjoying the United States Army Boot Camp at Fort Ord with one of my high school classmate's, Earl Wilhite. Like all young people of that age, we probably thought that things were tough at home, and that we wanted to get out on our own so that we could be independent and "do what we wanted to do." Well, the Army had other ideas about who was going to decide what we would or would not do. Home was never viewed so well as while we were in Boot Camp. It was a good growth experience for me as I spent three years in the Army. After returning home from the Army I worked in the Warehouse at both the Lawrence Radiation Lab in Livermore, and the United Can Company in Hayward........until I was able to follow my childhood dream of entering the field of law enforcement. I retired with a total Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) service time of 37 years in law enforcement working in my early career years with the Hayward, Oakland and Pleasanton Police Departments. Commensurate with my early work experience, I graduated with an AA Degree in Police Science from Chabot College; and with both a Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Criminal Justice Administration from San Jose State University. Because of lower back related injuries incurred while working in the field, I moved to the Education and Training segment of law enforcement. I served as an Instructor with the Criminal Justice Administration Program at San Jose State University; taught Part-Time in a number of Community College law enfo...Expand for more
rcement programs; was a Police Academy Coordinator in Sacramento for two years; then was appointed as the youngest Director of one of the 29 Regional Criminal Justice Training Centers in Stockton, California. I spent the last 23.3 years of my law enforcement career in a State Regulatory Agency with the State of California, Department of Justice, Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) serving as a Law Enforcement Consultant, Senior Law Enforcement Consultant, and finally as a Bureau Chief. I retired September 1, 2004, and I am now living at Lincoln Hills, a Del Webb Retirement Community in Lincoln, California. I spend most of my time doing volunteer work for children through the local KIWANIS Club, and the Lincoln Police Activities League (PAL). I also spend time working out at the gym, both fly fishing and sport fishing, along with waterfowl and upland game hunting. Additionally, I do some contract work occasionally with the California Department of Justice. I am currently going through a divorce.........been married previously........still trying to get it right. I have no children. With the exception of my lower back issues, my health is excellent. I did go through a successful six-way heart bypass surgery in 1999 that caused me to take a second look at my Type A Work Behavior. I feel that I have been extremely blessed throughout the years, and I look forward to enjoying my retirement years with family and friends. I wish all of my San Lorenzo High School classmates continued health and enjoyable years with their families and friends. Don Moura
