Donald's Story

Life Hi, hello, good to see you, and where the heck have you been for the past 30 years? I've gotten around a bit in my time, mostly due to my present job as the owner and driver of a semi tractor-trailer. I started that in 1994 and just kept going with it. Now I drive cross-country and if there's a town I haven't at least been through then I'm sure it's coming up soon on my travel itinerary. I've made stops in all the major ones and even worked out time to see a few sights between jobs. Some people ask why I'd want a job like this and I tell them it's just for the money and they nod and go on their way. They'd never believe the truth: I do it for the sunsets. I own a home in San Antonio where I live with my wife of 25 years, Barbara. We have two chihuahuas that are positive the house actually belongs to them and we are just around to run errands like getting the dog food and letting them out into the yard when they want and back in the house when they feel like coming in. Between the last time I saw any of you and now I've had a few ups and downs, but what's life without something to keep it interesting. My employment hasn't always been something to write home about, but it's mostly been interesting. I've been a cook, soda-jerk, tire salesman, manager of several businesses, gas station attendant, tow-truck driver and repo man. I've had a brush with the law and done a little political campaigning for a few candidates I cared about and thought had some integrity. I won't mention who or weather they were successful, or which parties they were affiliated with, to avoid embarrassment to all concerned. I've done a bit of writing, and even gotten some of it published. Poetry mostly. My prose is not yet, nor ever likely to be, a thing of admiration or inspiration. These days I'm a responsible, (who would ever have believed I'd be using that word to describe myself?) well at least mostly responsible, small business owner fighting the forces of corporate domination and federal bureaucracy and trying to make my way in the world without los...Expand for more
ing sight of the past that made me what I've become or the people I've known along the way. I've lost touch with most but I wouldn't mind hearing from some who still remember the old times, if only so they can fill in the drug and alcohol induced blank spaces in my own memories. Juuusst kidding. Later. School If I had a chance to go back and do it all over again, would I? Wow, what a question. I suppose it's the natural one to consider though. If I could go back to then with what I know now, yes. In a heartbeat. Or a New York minute, as you will. It would be nice to be able to realize sex isn't the most important thing in the cosmos. It is right up there in the top 10, but there are a few other things that I could have been thinking of. Like grades, for instance. And SAT's. And avoiding getting in trouble with the law. And oh, yeah, spelling. I would not be happy to go through puberty again, what with screaming harmones and their by-products. Drooling speechlesness around attractive girls (attractive being defined as 'breathing'), and the feeling that I was wearing a t-shirt saying "THIS IS THE PERSON YOU'VE BEEN WARNING YOUR DAUGHTER ABOUT" that was clearly visible to any parent that happened to look at me. That sort of thing. It would be nice to have my first car back again, a 1965 Chevrolet Corvair convertible. I'd be more careful how I took care of it, considering what it's value would be to-day if it wasn't scrapped in about 1973. It would be great to be able to dance without looking as thogh I were having an epileptic seizure. Or severly injuring my date's feet. It would be terrific if the only physical malady I had to worry about was acne. And it really would have been nice to know that girls were as interested in making out as I was so that I could have relaxed about it and just been able to go with things. It would have been sooooo much simpler. Still, we are the end result of our life decisions as well as our environment, And maybe I wouldn't have learned some of the things I did if I hadn't screwed up a time or two back then.
