Donald's Story

After four years at St. John's University, I spent time traveling up and down the east coast trying to find a teaching position Moved to New Jersey. Taught for 12.5 years and then became a vice principal after taking my masters at Rutgers. After 2.5 years of that, I changed districts and was a principal of a Kdg. - 3rd grade school for 19.5 years before retiring in March of 2013. Been married twice, 4 step children, two from each marriage. 5 grandchildren. Spend my leisure time fishing, reading, bowling, playing softball, drumming, gardening, visiting my sister who is in Merrick, and occasional traveling. Still root for the Pittsburgh Pirates which I did as a kid, still collect baseball cards which I did as a kid. Have done many of the things I wasn't able to do as a high school student who wasn't part of the 'in crowd" such as donkey basketball, basketball against the Harlem Wizards, acted in the High School Play. I've coached girls softball for the recreation department and watched all of my stepkids overcome obstacles to become successful adults. I spend lots of time thinking of those high school years, playing in the pit band for Hello Dolly, listening to Elton John's first album in Curti's English class, watching the football team dominate L.I. sports and the wrestling team do a...Expand for more
lmost as well. Remember riding the cheerleader bus to away games as part of the pep band, having pretzel fights in the band room, using the urinals in John's john, the mini riot when the police had to come in, senior cut day and playing golf at Bethpage, but most of all many old friends and acquaintances and the little things we did together that are so easy to take for granted when you are young, ice hockey on the pond behind the high school, touch football in the street, hanging out in the woods, cutting across the parkway to get home faster than one of the 40 or so buses could get you out of the school parking lot, walking home after the regents exam in geometry that they curved the results for ( a Mill Lane memory as a freshman)marching band as we spun the spinning wheel off the field during practice and marched back in so we wouldn't miss lunch leaving old Fred Fiore out there yelling with his megaphone and on and on and on and on. At 61 I'm healthy, had a job I enjoyed going to 95% of the time, and my parents lived to 85 and 92. Certainly doesn't leave much room for complaining. Hope all 1,055 or so of my fellow graduates from the class of '72 as well as those who were in the two classes ahead and behind us are doing well and my prayers to those of our classmates who have passed away.
