Donald's Story

After High School I moved to Gresham, Oregon and attended Mt. Hood Community College. After that I worked for one year at Portland Radio Supply where we sold ham radio equipment and electronics parts. I was laid off in 1980, along with four others. Business was down and they couldn't afford to keep us. In fact, they went out of business in 1995. I moved back to Vancouver and attended Clark College, majoring in Electronics. In 1984, just when I was finishing, Washington's on line lottery was getting started. I went to work for Automated Wagering on January 5, 1984. I actually worked out of Vancouver and not Olympia as the job link indicates. Back then Automated Wagering was part of Ticketron, which was owned by Control Data. The company has gone through numerous ownership changes since then. It is currently part of Scientific Games, better known for scratch off tickets. In 1988 Automated Wagering won the contract to run Florida's on line lottery. I moved to Gainesville. In 1996 I married Margaret Johnston. She moved from Ohio to Jacksonville about the same time I moved to Gainesville. We met at a contra dance in Gainesville. Margaret currently works for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida as a customer service representative. She is also a student at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville where she is majoring in Psychology. After this term and two more classes this summer she will have her bachelor's degree. Next she will go on and get her masters degree. She wants to be a councilor and help young girls. She is also interested in helping the homeless. Our church is part of what is called the Interfaith Hospitality Network. Different churches host homeless families on a rotating basis for one week at a time providing shelter, meals, and help with finding work and permanent housing. Volunteers at each church do all the needed work. Until recently Margaret was part of that group. My step daughter, Lael Johnston turned 20 in November. At a young age she showed a lot of talent in drawing. She would use that in the evening as a way of processing her day. She had a talent that was far beyond anything I had at that age. Margaret saw this talent too and encouraged Lael to continue. When Lael was in elementary school an after school arts program was starting near her school. Margaret got her enrolled in that. The year Lael entered middle school an art magnet middle school was opening in Jacksonville. One of the requirements for entry was that she have some kind of formal art training. Lael didn't have any of that. She mostly taught herself. There was no art teacher at her elementary school and, for some reason, the after school program didn't count as art training. When they saw the quality of the work she was doing at that time they accepted her. The art magnet school has various departments, including music (instrumental), music (singing), writing, dance, and painting and drawing. Lael, of course was in painting and drawing. She had these extra art classes along with the regular academic work. There was already an art magnet high school in Jacksonville. Lael was accepted there. She graduated in 2007. After graduating Lael wanted to take some time off from school. Although she got to learn a lot of art school was stressful for her. She has a learning disability, mostly a processing disorder. I think Lael could make a career at art if she really applied herself. That summer she moved to Dayton, Ohio to help take care of her grandfather. Her grandmother died in July, 2006 so he was by himself. She was a big help to him but it turned out to be more than she could handle. After five months she wanted to come home. I drove up to get her and all her stuff. Margaret's dad is getting good care at home, even without Lael there. own an interest in the arts as well. I think his talent is more in singing and acting. His acting style is very humorous, a cross between Jim Carry and Harpo Marx. He's been exposed to a wide variety of music. My favorite band (and his) is Rush. We also like "Weird Al" Yankovic, U2, and I recently introduced him to Genesis and Twisted Sister. We've taken him to see the Jacksonville Symphony where we've heard them play everything from the classics to Pink Floyd. He's also seen a variety of bands at the Northeast Florida Highland Games. We go there because Margaret is part Scottish. We see a lot of music there, from traditional Celtic bands to rock bands with fiddles and bagpipes. William has been in the choir at school and at church. He doesn't play any instruments, not yet anyway. My favorite musician is Neil Peart, the drummer and lyricist for Rush. Because of that William showed an interest in drums and percussion at one point, then he showed interest in playing the guitar. He will be in middle school next school year. He auditioned to get into the choir at the same school Lael attended. We just received a letter from the School District saying he has been accepted there next year. 2006 and 2007 was a bad couple of year for William. Along with losing Margaret's mom in 2006 my dad died about two months later. William lost two grandparents in a very short time and it set the tone for the coming school year. His grades went from mostly A's to straight F's that year and he lost interest in a number of things he liked. If I mentioned my dad he would suddenly get very quiet and sad. That same year at school his class was tested as part of a state-wide comprehensive testing program. Despite getting F's in his academic work he scored some of the highest scores, not only in his school, but in the nation. The principal called the school district to discuss this one. They let him pass to the next grade because of the high marks he got on the tests. With some counseling William has gotten his life back together and he's getting good grades again. When I remember something about my dad I can tell William about it and he seems happy to hear the story. Besides music William also has a strong interest in science. I recently helped him write a science paper. It had to be something about hurricanes, volcanoes, tsunamis, etc. He wanted to do a paper on Mt. St. Helens because he's been there twice. I helped him find information on the Web. Having witnessed the big eruption in 1980 I was able to give him some of my own memories to add to the report. He got a score of 100. As for me, I turned 50 last year. Rush performed in Jacksonville the week before my birthday. It was their first concert in Jacksonville in 14 years. Margaret, William, and I went (Lael didn't want to go). William was just as excited as I was to see them. On my birthday we left for a church retreat. Our church has a weekend retreat every spring. The last few years it has been near my birthday. I didn't have a cake that year or a lot of presents. I thought of the retreat as a weekend party and seeing Rush in concert as my present. The job that brought me to Florida in 1988, doing computer support for the lottery, ended in 2005. Since then I've worked a series of short term jobs in and around Jacksonville through several temp agencies. For the past year and a half I worked with a company called Unisys. We were under contract with Dell to install and maintain PCs for CitiGroup. Citi has a call center in Jacksonville with close to 6,000 computers. Unfortunately, that contract was terminated. My last day there was December 18 (one week before Christmas). I've already had several job interviews and a one-day job in nearby St. Augustine. I'm on a two-week project now to help set up about 300 PCs somewhere in Jacksonville. For more details on what I'm up to, including my job search, you can go to my Web site, halldw.tripod.com.
