Donald's Story
Life
My son tells me not to tell all my "stories; it makes you sound like your 70! Nobody could have done all of that...I know you did because I was there for most of it, but..."
Anyway, I taught in the Virgin Islands, was a territorial (state level) Wrestling Commissioner, worked in Admissions at Carthage, became Director of Admissions of Suomi College (now Finlandia University), received two M.A.'s and a Ph.D. from The University of Michigan, worked for the Office of Planning; the Office of Minority Student Services at University of Michigan; and the
U of M's Admissions Office as well as teaching Political Science at Michigan and a multiplicity of other colleges including Elmhurst and Aurora University where I served as Department Chairman.
At 31, I became the Dean of the College (Chief Academic Officer) at Springfield College.
For the past two decades-plus my work entailed federal investigations for the U.S. Government. I was selected to attend Harvard University's JFK School of Government from a national pool of candidates.
In May of 2005, colleagues nominated me as Federal Employee of the Year for Outstanding Job Competence and Community Service.
The event meant you competed against other Federal Departments and Agencies for the ultimate honor of Finalist. The event occured at Soldiers Field Cadillac Club.
However, those who remember me from high school may remember me as the booking agent/talent scout for the the number one groups out of Lyons Twp. and other high schools. The Unispheres, Almost Anything, J.W. Sole, The Reason For (out of R-B), The JamesTown Massacre and others to name a few were those I managed. Bob Monaco, the guy who worked for ABC/Dunhill Records asked me to come to work for him. His groups included The Cryan' Shames, American Breed and Grammy Winner Shaka Khan. I told him that the college thing had to be done first. However, the photo ...Expand for more
of my Grammy nominated son from The Shins shows that the stuff did not end with my degrees. Enjoy their music; those who were around in the 60's and 70's should like it. Music he wrote personally will be out on his fourth CD with his Chicago based group, now truly national group Fruit Bats. There newest CD's release date is August 4, 2009. My son's work as leader of the alternative folk rock group "Fruit Bats" landed him on "Last Call with Carson Daly." He writes all of his own music.
He also took up with his friends and became a part of "The Shins". Their 2007 release premiered #2 on Billboard its' first week; that same week Justin Timberlake began by being ranked at #5. The Shins traveled to four continents and were ranked #9 in the world; they sold out the same venue that the Beatles, The Who and Rolling Stones did in 20 minutes via the internet. They appeared on Saturday Night Live in '07, Letterman, The Tonight Show with Leno and Late Night with Conan. What is neat about these guys is they have not gone Hollywood about it.
Eric D. Johnson of Fruit Bats (and The Shins) came into his own in that his fourth release, "The Ruminant Band" (released 8/04/2009) was ranked on Billboard Charts and #1 on CMJ College radio in 2009. His most recent CD in 2011, "Tripper", was released in August, 2011. Fruit Bats finished a cross-country U.S. tour in 2011 and will be in Europe during November and December of 2011.He will begin a tour of Europe in the U.K. and the rest in December '09. I used to play to my "kids" via guitar or singing.
Eric D. Johnson is also doing scoring and new music for movies including: "Our Idiot Brother" with Paul Rudd and before that "Ceremony" with Uma Thurman.
My daughter is married, and also picked up on the music. She works at Old Town School of Music in Chicago where her husband works as well and to quote her is "happy as a clam" in married life.
