Donald's Story
Life
Joined the navy after graduation. Inducted at Whitehall Street (place Arlo Guthrie sang about in "Alice's Restaurant" and "Yes" there really was a
Group W" bench). Great Lakes bootcamp. Key West sonar school. Sub school New London. Assigned to USS Thomas Jefferson SSBN 618 operating out of New London. Married Patricia Bates, who was in our class until she moved to Waterford in '68, in 1971(Still together after 44 years, 3 children(2 boys/1 girl), 6 grandchildren later & 1 great grand child). Transferred to Submarine Training Center at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii 75-79. Came to Charleston, SC '7...Expand for more
9, 2nd submarine USS John C. Calhoun SSBN 630. Transferred to USS Canopus, AS-34, 83-87, then to AOIC, Mobile Technical Unit 14 in Kings Bay, GA. Retired 1989. Then project engineer for installation of computer & other systems on various naval ships til I retired again in '95...I thought. But got into trucking. Driver boxes, flatbeds, tanks and containers. Then dispatcher. Then terminal manager. Then Director Southeast Regional Operations for national intermodal trucking company until April 2010 when I retired again, hopefully, for the last time.
