Donald's Story
After I grad. from CHS, I worked at Potlatch Forests Inc. during the summer for several years while pursuing higher education. I went to NICE, Lewiston, for the first year, then stopped and worked for a year. I then attended Pacific Lutheran College, Tacoma, WA for a year. In 1949 I stayed home and worked fulltime at PFI and went to NICE parttime. Then the Korean War broke out and I was drafted into the Army in Nov. 1950. I Trained at Cp. Cooke, CA. (now Vandenberg AFB) until April 1, 1951, and was shipped over seas to Japan. with my division. I was in Japan for about 9 months and in Jan. 1952 went with my Division (40th Inf.) to Korea. I was attached to the Unit Personnel Section of Service Co. of the 224th Inf. Regt.
In Sept. of 1952 my time in the army was closing and I was brought back to the US, discharged from the Army on Oct. 28th, 1952. I worked at PFI until the fall of 1953, and then returned to PLC, graduating in 1955, with a BA degree, with a major in history and a minor in Greek. The next Fall, I entered Luther Theological Seminary, St. Paul, MN, from which I graduated in 1959. (After my second year at the seminary, I interned at Morris, IL for 14 months.) Upon graduation from seminary, I accepted a call to serve a congregation in Plains, MT, and also to start a congregation at Thompson Falls, MT. In 1962 I received a call to start a congregatio...Expand for more
n at Post Falls, Idaho. I served there until 1967, when I accepted a call from the Joplin Lutheran Parish in Joplin, MT. I served Joplin until the end of l973. I began work at Silverton, OR in 1974 and served there 20 years retiring in l993. We then sold our home there and moved to Gresham where we built a new home. My wife, Bette, died in Nov. 2006. After her death I sold our home and bought the townhouse in which I live today in Gresham.
My companion has become my little poodle, Shadow, who stays with me most of the time.
I have four children, 3 daughters, Faith, Joy, and Dana, and one son, Jon. I have 14 grandchildren and 2 great grandsons. My health is quite good for someone who is 81 years old. I exercise at least 3 days a week at LA Fitness and walk my dog 3 or 4 times a day besides. I enjoy visiting my neighbors and friends and if any of my old classmates from Clarkston should be coming through Gresham, I would welcome a visit and some "catchup time" with them. I hope that the class of 46 will have a re-union again in 2011, and that I will be able to attend. Our numbers are dwindling, I know.
Incidently, Joanna Klick (Jeffreys) live about 4 miles from me and we have gotten together for coffee from time to time. We would love to include others if you are around here or if you are coming thru this way. Let us know. My phone is: 503-492-3393.
