Donna's Story
After college, I began working at the Horry County Department of Social Services in Conway, SC. I left in 1982, traveled to Houston, TX and back to Birmingham, Al. I worked there for a few months and moved to Shiloh, GA, about 70 miles south of Atlanta and 35 miles north of Ft. Benning, GA. I have worked with the Muscogee Co. DFACS and Child Support Enforcement Offices. I began work as a Resource Coordinator for the PreKindergarten Program at Park Elementary in Harris County, Georgia in 1994 and in 1997 returned to college at Columbus State University for teacher certification in Middle Grades Education with concentrations in Social Studies and Language Arts. I taught 5th Grade Language Arts/Grammar-Writing for 5 years at Park Elementary in Hamilton, GA just a short distance from Callaway Gardens. since that time, I have become certified in Early Childhood Education (although I enjoy middle grades much more), received my Teacher Support Specialist Endorsement, and Reading Endorsement. I taught 3rd grade and began working on my Master's degree in Middle Grades Education. I returned to 5th grade at the same school and completed my Masters Degree. I am still teaching 5th grade but I am now working in a brand new beautiful faciility - Creekside School - which houses 5th and 6th grade students from the entire county. My husband and I have two sons from his first marriage [both married who live near us], one son of our own (who lives near Oklahoma City), two grandsons, and one granddaughter. My husband worked for CSX railroad for many years then started his own business. He retired last year and the business became mine so now he occasionally works for me. Due to the economic woes, there is very little work in construction so needless to say, there is no work for him. We are active in our church in Shiloh. In August 2007, I took the position of interim choir director at the church just to get us through a revival. I have held this position for over three years and am now the church music director. God works in mysterious ways.. I love teaching and I am sure that Mrs. Elizabeth Blanton and Mrs. Fleetie Ayers had something to do with that.
