Donna's Story
Life
U of Miami as music major; time off to work; transfer to UMd, still music ed; change of major to Spanish ed (thus finding time to start dancing again); semester in Spain, Universidad de Valencia (I swore if Reagan was elected I'd leave the county); back to UMd to supposedly graduate, but didn't, due to the world's worst teacher/advisor. Summers worked for government up till then (and year off), but first venture into "private" sector for a series of jobs vaguely or blatantly graphic (arts) in nature. Started teaching Hebrew school since I couldn't teach anything else. Back to school to actually get my degree (better advisor). Started doing crafts (textile basketry and polymer clay). Studied more dance, including flamenco. Still working, still teaching, still doing theater (at that time, performing and choreographing), then subbing. Taught Spanish at a private school, and ever more Hebrew school. More and more theater (adding directing, costuming, props, sound design, program/flyer design). Worked for many places, still model for art classes for supplementary income, yada yada. Summers I'm usually found directing camp, usually drama camp. Spent five years as the Educational Director for the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Jewish Community Group and Beth Torah Congregation. (At the monthly Principal's Council meetings I feel sure that the many I have worked for and whose colleague I now am are secretly laughing at me, as if they had always been thinking, "You should only grow up and have teachers of your own some day!" er 2000 I took a teacher trip to Italy, Greece, and Israel for 3.5 weeks. Exhausting and over-programmed, there were some negatives and many positives. It represented a personal heritage trip for me, though, in that part of my family was from Israel, part from Greece, and part of the Greek family was Italian also (dual citizenship). Got another grant for a short educators' trip to Israel in 2002. Have been pursuing Masters in Judaic Ed through GWU, but on hold right now. A lot of my recent theater stuff has been with The Washington Savoyards, but didn't have any time for the last several years. Resigned from my director's job last summer, and went to work for MC Board of Elections on a temporary basis. Now involved in a full-time job search for next school year (or sooner, if I pick a non school job). While working on a proposal for a graduate class I was taking last year, I learned about a group of Ladino speakers (Judeo-Spanish), and have been attending monthly meetings of this Sephardic cultural group. Leaving my director's job gave me some theater time, so I recently concluded a production of Mikado. Never a dull moment!
