Donald's Story
Life
After graduation I went to work for Gaithersburg Glass. I went in the Army in October, 1970 for nineteen months. In November, 1972, I got married. We had our first son, Brian, in November, 1978. My partner and I bought Gaithersburg Glass in 1983. My wife and I had our second son, Daniel, in Fedruary, 1985. When I got out of the Army, I really enjoyed playing in a men's touch football league for sixteen years and softball for thirty seven years. I also enoyed dragracing for twenty eight years. I last ran a dragster which ran 7.8 seconds at about 170 mph. in the quarter mile. I had a total of 5 drag cars over the years. I also did a little football coaching when my oldest son was in little league and again when my youngest son was in little league. For their baseball teams, I sometimes coached first or third base. So far I've really enjoyed my life. I had a hard time dealing with my dad's passing in Oct. 1994 and then my brother's passing in Oct. 2002. I lost my business partner from cancer in May 2001. My oldest son graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2002 and my youngest son graduated from the NASCAR Technical Institute in July 2005. My oldest son, Brian, still lives in S. Carolina as he loves it there. My youngest son, Daniel, now lives in Martinsburg, W.V. and is an auto mechanic. As of Sept. 2020 he's now a divorced single parent with custody of his two kids. Jackie and I help them alot. I sold the glass company in February, 2007, so I'm now semi retired. My wife is still working and plans on retiring at the end of the year. After taking it easy for ten months, I started working as a sales representative for a glass wholesaler located in N. Carolina and I worked from my home. Then I went and bought an auto repair shop in Monrovia on July 1, 2009 with my son, and sold it in Sept. 2013. In April 2011 I went to work full time again as an estimator for Banner Glass Co. My oldest son still lives in S. Carolina and is still single. I quit Banner Glass in Ap...Expand for more
ril 2012 and in November,2012 I went to work part time selling window and door hardware. Now it's Feb. 15, 2016 and I'm going back to work at Banner Glass as an estimator, only part time this time. Well, this only lasted til May 13th as Banner Glass went out of business. Just a little inside story, I've been singing in the church choir for about fifteen years and we also do a small musical show for Christmas, Easter and our fall show. Didn't realize how much fun this could be as I explore into more as I get older. I'm back at AMSCO selling window and door hardware part time again. My oldest son still lives in S. Carolina and is still single. My wife finally retired in Feb. 2020 after 47 years. We're planning to sell our home here and move to W. Virginia to be closer to our son and grandkids. We moved to Martinsburg, W. Virginia in August, 2020. We went from 2 acres to 1/4 acre and from about 4,000 sq. ft. to 1,600 sq. ft. What a difference. I'm still working 3 days a week in Frederick now. Fixing my Duster so I can start driving it more There's pictures of it on facebook. Had it 49 year now. We help my younger son out some and get the grandkids a little more now. I quit working completely in Sept. 2021. I drive my Duster now a little bit since I fixed it back up. Still want to convert the front brakes to disc brakes and repaint it. My youngest son got remarried Apr. 2022 to a gal with 4 kids. They just had one of there own Mar. 2023, so now with his two, her four, and the new one, they have seven. Crazy! My oldest son in S. Carolina is still single and loving it as he recently became part owner of the company he was working for. Since last year I've developed a bad hip and had a heart ablasion for A-Fib. My youngest son still has his daytime job, but he just started his own auto repair business in the evenings. Between the grandkids and their sports and helping my son along with my small house chores, I stay pretty busy. I still go to Gaithersburg once a week to visit my mom.
