Donnie's Story
Life
2007 - Enlisted in the Army right out of High School. Four years, Infantry squad leader, anti-tank and mortar. Joined the Air National Guard after that. Retired in Feb 2004 as a LtCol. Served in Desert during Iraqi Freedom for 6 months. Civilian jobs - owned a few lunch trucks with Joe's Catering for a few years (company my dad worked for). Managed a branch of Banc One Financial. Was a Emergency Room Nurse at Audubon Hospital for 6 years. Married for 20+ years, a step-daughter (29)(Married! Grandson!) and a son (18). College grad and ran for office in 2000, state house. I also ran for student council president as a junior at BD. I did not fare any better for the state house! I lived in Tokyo Japan for 2 years and got my Private pilots lisense. My wife is a Foreign Service specialist. Tokyo was great! Learning Japanese was tough but these are really nice people. Sold everything but the cat and kids and we are now traveling the world. Moved to Moscow in Aug 2004. Moscow is not bad. But cold! Growing all the time. Cars everywhere here. Lots of German cars although Japanese and Korean cars are co...Expand for more
ming on strong. Chevy builds a Russian 4x4. Driving here is a real experience. 2 biggest growth indutries are churches and casinos (both require an act of faith!). No problems except the sliding dollar and that is not that bad. Live in great housing an hour out of Moscow. I work at the Embassy and my son is learing Russian (Not well, he likes Japanese and finds Russian harder?)I can read some Cyrillic but speaking it difficult.
Now live in the United Arab Emerates (U.A.E.) Great place! 2 seasons - summer and hell. Tried Arabic, very tough. Few people here speak Arabic. English and Urdu, mostly. Lots of expensive cars.
2009 - Son is now in Basic, which is great as my wife and I are now a couple again. (a couple of what remains to be seen). Went down Dixie highway last time I was in town. Dropped everyone off and went alone. Lots of changes but many images returned. I had forgotten a lot but seeing he old neighborhood and BD (Holy Cross) was a catalyst to remember a lot. All good memories. It was a pretty good time to grow up, and a really decent place to do it to. Great thing to do once a decade.
