Doreen's Story

Life: August 6th 2008, I am going in for cochlear implant surgery which will open many doors of the hearing world. What I couldn't hear for years will be dramatically increased. September 4th 2008, I was fitted with the exterior devices, so far, the sounds are not very established and sound hollow, distorted and muffled. But, as time goes on I understand the sounds will become better more clear as my brain and ears start to work together. March 2008, I currently have a live in boyfriend, David. Are we going to get married, I don¿t think so, to many challenges in life as it is to get married. I need an open door some place. I have 4 beautiful daughters ages 27, 22, 20, and 17 this coming year. 2 terrific granddaughters ages 7 and 4 years. Never thinking it was possible to have boys in the family, but now have 3 grandsons 3, 1, 1 years of age as well. Plus a 9-year-old step granddaughter from my daughters husbands past relationship. I have 2 dogs Rachel and Roxie, and the Cat of the house Oliver. I currently reside in Allendale, Michigan been here since 1979. I coached ATYAA girl¿s softball for about 9 years, (Retired). I enjoy reading, kayaking, camping, walking in the woods with David and the dogs, and playing with my grandchildren. I enjoy reading about herbs, vitamins and different religions (which I am beginning to believe this is all a myth.) 2006 was a very trying time: My 17 year old daughter was in a critical car accident January 20th, she had 28 broken bones 2 collapsed lungs, a blown bronchial tube, going into surgery with 0 percent chance of survival, and if she survived this they didn¿t know even if the surgery would be a success until she started to cough to see if the patch on her bronchial would hold up. Thousands of prayers and many great doctors later she is still with us, almost completely mended, but still has great pain. She is a miracle! IT doesn¿t pay to...Expand for more
drive 70 mph around curves. Her hospital bill came to about a million dollars. But thanks to my insurance and car insurance, it was totally covered. Today, my daughter is going to be 20 years old, still has pain but she is doing great, she currently is working and tending her daughter. School: I know many of you never thought I would make it through High School, my debilitating hearing issues, had played a strong role on my education and creating friendships. I struggled strongly with this, never wanted to let people know, and tried to hide it the best way possible. BUT I DID IT! Hearing Disability: I just was told in 2008 that I am a great candidate for cochlear implant, I am currently checking out my options. If I do get this done I will understand 80 percent of what is being said without lip reading. I only understand 30 percent today, so this is a tremendous difference. College: I have a 2-year Commercial Art degree from Ferris State College, among other classes I have taken to keep my education up. College was the best time of my life! Made many friends and went from King Kong to Amazon woman... go figure; I think the Amazon name was much better at least it means a warrior woman. But all of all, College was fun; do not regret any thing about it. Workplace: I started working in Greenville at a printing company right after college, which didn't go over well at all. Left there, and found works at Meijers Central Marketing, ticketing clothes as a call girl. Did this about 10 months before getting hired in the Graphic Dept. worked there from 1980 to 1986, then went in to the Advertising Dept, worked there until 1990. Left Meijers and went to work for Amway now Alticor, as a typesetter but then that position was dissolved because of my prior classes and my determination to work, I was hired into the Creative Packaging Dept, been there since... I have 18 years this year of service.
