Doris's Story

I hope I am remembered as a friendly and fun person by classmates. I always wanted to be a housewife or a nurse when I grew up. I was not very studious in school so I didn't think I could go to college so a mom and housewife it was. I never worked outside of the home while raising three children but I finally did go to school after raising three children. I attended Miami-Dade Community College and graduated as valedictorian in 1993 after Hurricane Andrew. I had to prove to myself that I could do it. I graduated the same year my oldest graduated from high school and we competed for grades. I blow off steam bywalking or cleaning or sometimes...yelling. I relax by sewing or crafting. Mamey Richards (remember her from Jr. High Home Ec?) would be proud of me as I have won several awards from my sewing even though she gave me an F. I don't remember doing anything wild in school. I just remember having a good time. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have great boss, plenty of Cuban coffee, and music to be able to deal with the day-to-day. I manage a law office now and I love my job. I have a great boss. I just tell him to go to his room when he nags. My hero is my dad. He was a very honest man who was straight forward. You always knew where you stood with my dad and that is how I aspire to be. I lived in Tamaqua, Pa. until two months after graduation when I moved to Miami, Florida. In 1975 I moved further south to Homestead, Florida and married Elias who I met in Miami. He is from Colombia, S.A. A big difference from Tamaqua. I experienced a lot of prejudice when I would go home to Tamaqua with my husband who is dark skinned Hispanic, and also in the Miami area in the 70's. Being married to a different culture is also hard but we persevered. In 1989 we built a home in Florida City, Florida and that is where we live now. On August 24th, 1992, we lived through Hurricane Andrew. It came through our front door and out the back. Never in my life had I experienced the fear of death so vividly and the inability to protect your children....Expand for more
We lived for two months without electric and three months without phones, lost portions of our roof and had to demolish every interior wall in our home and rebuild. The people of Tamaqua were our saving grace. They found us before any local authorities did. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Wesley Kitt, because I haven't seen him in years.. My first crush is still around in Tamaqua and still a person whom I consider a good friend although he detests the University of Miami football team! Go CANES! I guess the biggest surprise in my life is how happy I am being a grandmother and realizing that aging does not bother me. I've learned a lot of patience from my children. I thank God every day that all three have turned out to be responsible adults. Danny is a pharmaceutical rep (legal drug salesman..LOL) in Ft. Lauderdale and will be married in the fall of 2009. Jessie is a Neonatal nurse practicioner in Tampa and will be married on March 20th, 2009. She also worked a year at Philadelphia Children's Hospital but was not a northern girl! Ha! Debi, our youngest, lives in Cutler Bay, Fl. about 20 minutes from us. She is married and has one son, Alex. She is a teacher. I would love to see Mrs. Setcavage again. She always treated me like someone who mattered to her and I thank her for that. My best friend would tell you I'm a very spiritual woman, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as very open. I love hearing from classmates and whenever I go home I like to meet up with people. I simply refuse to be like those vain people who are too afraid to see people from the past because they are too fat....too gray....too old looking...didn't acheive what they wanted to do or whatever. People have to accept me for the way I look today as I will accept them. Former classmates were an intregal part of my life and I will never forget them and cherish seeing them whenever I can! You can catch up with me on my blog on the internet.... dorismeneses.blogspot.com Look forward to hearing from you all!
