Doris's Story

After high school, I was accepted at New Paltz State University (now SUNY New Paltz) and majored in Education with an academic major in Biology. I married in my last month of college and moved to Kingston, NY. While teaching in Hyde Park, NY, my husband and I had a house built in the Town of Esopus. After four years of teaching, I left to have my first daughter, Diane. Twenty months later, I had my second daughter, Sharon. I became involved in local politics, first becoming a member of the Esopus Planning Board, later holding the chair position. I ran as an independent candidate for town council to remind residents of the need to vote for individuals who are willing to improve their community, rather than for partisan reasons. It was a big loss, but lots of fun. I separated in 1974. My children and I moved to Hyde Park. I began teaching in Poughkeepsie, NY where I taught for 24 years. After buying a house in a small single family home community, I became involved again in community activities, was appointed to the planning board, an...Expand for more
d ran for councilwoman in my Ward. I won the second time I ran and served for a two-year term from 1992-1993. I retired from teaching in 1998, but continue my involvement in politics, both locally and statewide. I even ran for Congress in the 20th Congressional district in the year 2004. Although I didn't win, it was a great experience and gave me the ability to talk publicly about my concerns for our nation. Some people even listened. I have four wonderful grandchildren with whom I enjoy sharing time when they visit . I can't express the great joy I have had and continue to have through dancing (ballroom and line) and meeting new people through social and political activities. My partner, John, has added a great deal of enjoyment to my life. in 2009, I joined the Poughkeepsie AAUW (American Association of University Women). It helps to fill my days and nights with additional activities. I was the Public Policy chair for three years. This gave me a chance to voice my concerns about women's issues and other human rights issues.
