Dorothea's Story
Life
Toni (Dorothea Beavers) Turner is an associate pastor and director of worship vocalists at Covenant Church of Pittsburgh, a non-denominational church in Wilkinsburg PA, where she serves under the senior leadership of Bishop Joseph L. Garlington Sr.
After graduation from Schenley, she spent the next 4 years at Cheyney State Univ. She lived in Philadelphia for 3 years and then to Chester PA where she taught in the Chester Upland School district for 3 years and then taught English in a basic adult education program. She later worked as a Reproductive Health Counselor for 6 years until she separated from the late artist Andrew Turner, and moved back to Pittsburgh with her two children in 1979.
Toni grew up singing in choirs at Grace Presbyterian Church, here in Pittsburgh, and has sung in church and school choirs all of her life. After dedicating her life to Jesus Christ, she began leading worship in the First Assembly of God in the Philadelphia area where she was a school teacher. After returning to Pittsburgh, she became involved in and received license from Greater Works school of ministry and ordination from Full Gospel Assemblies of the World. by the same name. They traveled with an evangelistic group called the Prayer Wheels, and Toni became a featured soloist with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Choir under the direction of Elder Curtis Lewis.
Since her involvement at Covenant Church in 1985 where she was also a featured soloist, she was ordained there has been involved in full time ministry. Her singing and teaching has taken her to many cities and countries around the world including, Trinidad, Barbados, St. Croix, several provinces across Canada from Quebec, to British Colombia, India, South Africa, Curaçao, and Zimbabwe. Her life call is to teach, motivate, and sing liberty to the captives.
Toni has had many years of experience singing commercial jingles for local recording studios and is also a requested background vocalist by many local artists and studios. She has been frequently seen and heard singing on television on public television, local, national and international stations. She has been recently asked to audition for the Pittsburgh Opera Chorus and is presently working on her first solo recording project.
Toni, who is single, is also an artist and is the proud mother of two adult children Dara, and Andrew, (both are artists and Behavioral Health Counselors) and grandmother of three.
