Doug's Story
Life
Attended University of Akron and Bowling Green State University. Worked for a label printing company in Toledo as Systems Analyst/Network Administrator. Married 1990, divorced 1992. Moved to Connecticut in 1993 to work for Programmed Solutions (PSI), a software company, as a programmer and was part of their management committee. Company was acquired in 2000 by Printcafe Software, a Pittsburgh-based company servicing the printing industry. Promoted to Director of Integration in July, 2000. Married for the second time in September, 2000. Moved to Pittsburgh in November, 2000. Bought a new home in December, 2001. Began commuting back and forth in December 2002 to Connecticut to take over as the head of the PSI development group back in the same office I used to work in. In October, 2003, Printcafe was acquired by Electronics for Imaging (EFI). In December of 2003 I returned to my integration technology role that I had been in prior to taking over the PSI development group.
Now it's 2007, and things have changed again. Learned a lot about myself this year, and it's looking like my second marriage is in its final stages. I'm comfortable with that, because I know exactly what was wrong in it, and I now know, finally, that I'm actually ready for a relationship. This marriage is just too weak to fix, and there just isn't a connection there. And I have to have that. I hope everyone has found what they...Expand for more
are looking for - my search is on again.
2008 brought more changes - my position with EFI was eliminated at the end of January, and I was given a severance package that lasted until August. Enjoyed the time off for a month or so, then began searching for a job. I've taken a position as Chief Technology Officer for a printing industry trade association - IPA. Very different from what I used to do - this position is about evaluating programs and member needs from the technology view point. A lot more people interaction - exactly what I was looking for.
And now we're in 2009, and the economy is in shambles. My divorce from my second wife was finalized in May of 2008. The position I had at the IPA ended up not really being what I was looking for, and ended in November of 2008. So I've been looking for a job ever since. I've had some interviews, both phone and in person, but nothing has panned out yet. I do feel incredibly fortunate to be able to get by as well as I've been able to, and I think I'm going to be able to get by a fair amount longer, without having to sell my house or tap any of my retirement funds. Of course that means that when I do find something, I'm going to have to aggressively save to restablish my savings. But then again, this experience has taught me how to live a leaner lifestyle. There's positives in everything. You just have to look for the positives a little harder sometimes.
