Doug's Story
Life
"...and I was born in the backseat of a Greyhound bus...rollin' down highway 41..." Oh wait..that was Gregg Allman. This is Doug's biography:
I was born in Wappingers Falls, New York in a blizzard on January 7. I lived in a house overlooking the Hudson River. Some of my earliest memories are ice skating on the river during the winter and taking the train to NYC.
When I was nine, we moved to Woodstock, NY (and Yes, I did attend the festival a few years later) I was visiting a friend and he asked me if I wanted to go to, "a concert".
We moved to Boca Raton, FL in the late 60's and for the first couple of years lived just off A1A.
I spent a lot of time surfing, fishing and snorkling and somehow found time to go to school.
In the early seventies my dad bought some land out in the boonies, West Boca and my brother and I built a dirtbike track in our backyard. My neighbor raised Arabian horses that we rode when we weren't riding motorcycles. We had all kinds of pets: raccoons, snakes, gators and even monkeys. It was an exciting place to live. I had a great graduation party at my house. Some of you were there :)
When I graduated, I bummed around Boca, Went to Jamaica for awhile with a friend from HS. Later we drove cross country in his sports car and spent 3 months just following the open road. That was the first time we had been west of the Mississippi. We had made a plan to save money and go to California when we graduated and I'm glad we followed through. He ended up moving to CA.
I had a lot of jobs, such as a gardener, bartender, mechanic.
After a couple of years I moved up to Tallahassee, FL to go to Florida State. While in school I worked as a DJ on campus radio. I got an internship at the local TV studio. I produced and directed a weekly cable show.
When I graduated I was promoted to TV studio manager.
When I graduated from college, I married my High School sweetheart. We bought a VW camper and we spent a year travelling around...Expand for more
the country. We started out in Key West and made it all the way to San Francisco. We came back to Tallahassee and I got my Masters degree.
In the early eighties we moved back to Boca and I got a job as an Engineer at IBM.
We travelled quite a lot in those days. Went to Europe, the Islands, and all around the US.
We bought a small house in Boca, 3 blocks from the beach. It was a fixer-upper (dump) but we spent some time and TLC on it and in the mid eighties we had the first of our three kids (Annika, Sonja, and Darek). We also picked up a parrot (Diablo, who we still have 25 years later), a dog and lots of other critters.
We lived the beach bum life until the mid nineties when I had the opportunity to try something new and we moved to Austin,Texas with IBM.
We bought a bigger house with a pool and a boat at the marina for waterskiing on the lake, since the beach at South Padre Island was four hours away, instead of four minutes :)
Austin was really cool, lots of hills, lakes, live music. I started playing guitar in college so there was always someone to jam with.
Before I knew it a decade had slipped by and I had an opportunity to take early retirement from IBM and a new position as a manager at Citrix in Fort Lauderdale. that took me to London, Edinburgh, Amsterdam and Norway on business. We moved back to our house on the island in Boca. We reconnected with our old friends and Darek is in Boca High.
Anyway, That's about it...I recently reconnected with an old dear friend and it's all good. My kids are a composite of Florida and Texas lifestyles..Love surfing, beachcombing, rodeos and country music. Though I have introduced them to 60's rock and roll.
My motto has always been Carpe diem and I have tried my best to make the most of every day, touch someone's life in a positive way and enjoy "la vida loca" this crazy life.
"May you build a ladder to the stars...
and climb on every rung...
and may you stay...
forever young". - Bob Dylan
