Doug's Story

Find me on Facebook Life Left Chemainus in 1974 (before grad but in grade 12) and headed to Prince Rupert, seeking my fame and fortune, looking for my pot of gold. Did all the things a young Rupert lad was expected to do such as kill fish for a living, drink and party like it was part of the Canada Health Food Guide. Fell into an apprenticeship as a glazier, aka a person who works with glass. I became quite involved in community and volunteer efforts and really felt like I belonged. My time in PR had tremendous upside to it, although I have never seen so much rain in my life. After 12 long wet years, I moved closer to home by settling in Langley in 1986....still had to have a buffer zone between Chemainus and myself. :-) Expo 86 was in full swing then and the lower mainland was abuzz with excitement and anticipation. I worked for a Vancouver glass company and slowly started doing my own glass work on the side, building up a clientele base. I was doing 2 jobs at once, for wages and for myself, albeit on a small scale. I stayed in Langley until 1991, and then moved to Maple Ridge for 7 years. It was a common-law situation, she had kids so I was a stepfather.....finally had a chance to re-live my childhood with minibikes, water-skiing, camping etc with the young boy and girl. While in Maple Ridge,In 1992, I went out on fulltime self employment with my glass company, RD Williams Glass And Mirror Ltd. My specialty was high end homes with custom and specialty glazing....things like glass floors and glass stair treads. I worked a lot with the Vancouver art glass community on a consulting and installation basis and this lead to me doing a job for Donald Trump in Gary Indian...Expand for more
a...the Donald wasn't there but I was hoping to meet Marla. After a parting of the common-law ways in 1997, I finally made it to Vancouver in 1997. It was a nice feeling to be able to go home for lunch if I so desired. The commuting all those years from Langley and then Maple Ridge were really wearing on me, and I have always loved driving anything....car, truck, boat, motorcycle. In 2002, after 26 years in the glazing trade, it was finally time to do something I had wanted to for a few years now...change my career. I had an epiphany one day, sitting at this very computer on this very chair.....I was reading the newspaper (an article on real estate to be exact) and the words "Real Estate" literally jumped off the page and hit me between the eyes. I immediately called a client of mine who is a realtor and asked about the process involved in becoming one myself. He told me about the UBC course and to start there. As I was already at the computer, I searched and found the UBC Faculty Of Commerce page and more specifically, information on the course. I started the course in August/02 and had my license in December/02. So here's where I am now....working for RE/MAX Crest Westside out of Vancouver (Kitsilano) and loving it. The self employed aspects are very familiar to me and the work ethic required has been ingrained for years from my glazing days. I am having a lot of fun, but the start up phase was a new learning curve. It's now April of 2004 and I live in Vancouver, am single, never been legally married, work as a Realtor and have all of my family on Vancouver Island. Life is good and I am happy. I sincerely hope that you are happy too. Regards, Doug Williams
