Douglas's Story
Life
Shortly after high school graduation, I left the Chicago Heights, Illinois area to pursue my dream of becoming a professional photographer. Oh, what a treat it is to see my photographs published in National Gastronomic, Autopsy Monthly, Popular Diseases, Kidneys for Kids and Bowels' Life.
I recently went back to Chicago Heights to see how the old town had changed...and, of course, I had my camera with me hoping to catch a few of the locals in some candid moments. But, I was sorely disappointed...evidently many of the current inhabitants shy away from having their picture taken...something about "losing a part of their soul"...
Drove by the old Chinatown section of Chicago Heights only to find that it, too, had changed....Wong Foo's Laundry had gone out of business...
Sometimes I lie in bed and wonder, what would life be like...if I were truly alive and not just the fuzz on a peach? Maybe life is like a bowl of cole slaw. The cabbage pieces are the people you meet, and the mayonnaise is the love that holds us together. And I am the mouse's head at the bottom of the bowl.
But I've never worried about fame or fortune or power or wealth. As long as I just have the simple things in life, ya know. Like sitting in front of the fir...Expand for more
eplace with a copy of War and Peace. You know, a book like that will feed a fire for half an hour.
You see my parents raised me by the good book - although I've yet to find that verse about the electric nipple clamps. It may be in Deuteronomy somewhere.. They raised me with those three magic words: total sensory deprivation. After that, everything is a picnic. And after spending six years of your life in the cellar, everything else seems like an adventure.
And I like to laugh...sometimes the simplest things put me into hysterics...maybe the corn laws of nineteenth-century England or the Boxer Rebellion - you know, the things lovers will talk about while in the throes of passion.
And, of course there's politics. I used to think I knew everything, but the older you get the more you see other points of view. If you could read everything about both sides, you'll pretty much be in the middle , which is the state you were in when you were totally ignorant. So my theory is if you maintain total ignorance - which isn't easy, but I try - you'll be just as far ahead as if you'd spent days and days reading about the whole issue. And you'll have that much extra time to play Pac-man.
So, anyway, that pretty much sums up my life. How's by you?
